When I saw him standing on the guard rail, I immediately knew what he was thinking. I couldn't help myself. I had to act fast.
"Hey I know what you're thinking! Please don't do it!" I called to him, with desperation in my voice. The boy turned around to face me, and I was surprised with what I saw. It was Carter Brown! He stayed silent and I could tell that he was waiting for me to say something else. His black hair was plastered to his face, and I could just make out his green eyes.
"Please come down from there!" I called to him, this time walking a bit closer.
"Why do you care?" He finally called back. Why do I care? Nobody deserves to die! I thought to myself.
"You don't even know me!" He called again. I had to think fast about what to say.
"Well, actually I do." I replied, trying to stay calm. He looked really confused and I could tell that he was thinking.
"Just please come down so I can talk to you." I tried to make my voice sound calm as possible. He hesitated for a moment before stepping down from the guard rail. I was so relieved and couldn't help myself. I ran over and hugged him tightly. I felt his body shudder, so I let go.
"I'm sorry," I tried to say, but the words stumbled out.
"I'm just so glad that you didn't jump." And I meant every word I said.
"My name is Emily Sans and I go to West Side middle school. Your name is Carter Brown and you go to West Side middle school." I only said that just so I could prove to him that I was not a stranger. How did he not know me? I'm in some of his classes.
"That's right," He mumbled under his breath. I took a deep breath. I've always liked Carter. He was smart, and he had this mysterious aura to him. He was shy, and that's one of the things that I liked best about him. He's also a Star Wars fan just like me. I took a deep breath.
"Where do I even start?" I said aloud. Carter looked like he was ready to listen, so I kept talking.
"To tell you the truth, I came here to do the exact same thing," His mouth gaped open. I decided that it was best to show him my cuts.
"I have to show you something." I said more quietly. I took another deep breath and began to roll up my sleeves. He gaped at them for a long time.
"Y-you did that to yourself?" He stammered. It's almost like he couldn't believe what he just saw. I nodded my head, fighting back the urge to cry.
"Oh god Emily... I'm so sorry." He said, sounding very sad. He caught me off guard and hugged me tightly. He then proceeded to tell me his story. He told me that his dad had died a few years ago, and that he got constantly bullied at school. He even told me that Jackson had tried to drown him when Carter had insulted him. I was angry at myself for not intervening that day. Why didn't I do something?! I thought to myself. Instead, all I could manage to say was:
"Jackson really did that to you?" He nodded his head. Carter was starting to make me feel like I mattered. We stood in silence for a moment before he finally spoke again.
"You know you could have just let me jump," I was shocked.
"But why!? You're such a wonderful person and I'm so glad that I ran into you!" And I really was.
"Up until now, I thought that nobody cared about me." He looked like he was going to cry as he said that.
"Well, now you have somebody who does." I replied. I looked right into his eyes. He leaned in and kissed me, and I enjoyed it. Despite the fact that the ground was rain soaked, we sat down, our backs against the guard rail. I put my head on his shoulder, and he put his arm around me. Before I could think about anything else, I saw a figure walking our way......
