I woke up to a bright light shinning right in my face. I slowly tried to open my eyes so that they could get used to the light. My whole body ached. I looked around and realized that I was in a hospital. Why was I here? I thought that I supposed to be dead! At that moment, a doctor stepped in with a clipboard in his hand.
"Hello Emily. How are you feeling today?" To be honest, I actually felt really good but just a bit sore. I wanted to answer the doctor, but my mouth was as dry as cotton. I was finally able to rasp out the words
"I'm alright." The doctor nodded his head and began looking through the papers.
"You had quite a fall yesterday, Emily. You're very lucky to be alive." As if I actually want to. I thought to myself.
"You fractured a couple of ribs and broke your nose, but you'll make a full recovery." The doctor wrote some stuff down on his clipboard and left me to rest. How in the world did I survive that fall? What about the others? The others! The thought of Carter rushed to my mind. I had to go find him. I peeled back the blankets on the bed and dangled my feet over the side. So far so good. My feet touched the cold linoleum floor and I shuddered. I walked over to the bathroom built in to the hospital room. I flipped on the dim florescent lights and stared at my reflection.
My hair looked messy and I had a black eye, along with a bandage on my nose. I finger-combed my hair and searched the room for my bag or any of my belongings. I checked a tiny closet thing and found my backpack along with my clothes in a neatly folded pile. I grabbed my backpack and began rooting through it. I was able to find some concealer and eyeshadow. Normally I don't wear much makeup, but I had to cover up this eye. I went back into the bathroom and quickly tugged on my clothes.
I worked for a few minutes on my eye, blending the makeup with my finger and some paper towels. Once I was done, it didn't look too shabby. I took a deep breath and flipped off the light in the bathroom. I walked over to the room door and slowly turned the handle. I poked my head out and scanned the area. There was nobody there, so I stepped into the hallway. I walked down the long corridor before finding a reception desk. My room number was 205. The receptionist looked up from her computer and smiled at me.
"Hi, could you help me locate Carter Brown please?" I asked her, hoping that she wouldn't get suspicious.
"Are you a family member to him?" Shit! How would I be able to see him?
"No, but I'm very close to him.. can you please make an exception?" The receptionist typed something on her computer and then spoke.
"Well, I suppose." I wanted to jump for joy at her words.
"His room number is 435." She smiled once again.
"Thank you so much!" The words came out of my mouth so fast as I practically bolted down the hall.
My chest hurt, so I stopped running. I walked and followed signs until I found an elevator. I pushed the up button, and waited for the doors to open. Luckily, there was nobody else in there and I pushed the button for floor 4. The elevator stopped at the correct floor, and as I stepped out, and older woman stepped in. Once again, I followed signs and room numbers until I finally found 435. The door was closed, and I slowly opened it and peered my head inside. There were no doctors or other visitors, so I stepped all the way inside.
"Carter!" I couldn't help saying, because I was so happy to see him. At the call of his name, he did not stir.
I walked over to him, and was horrified by the sight. There were so many tubes and contraptions hooked up to him that he was hardly recognizable.
"Carter?" My voice was a shocked whisper as I reached out and pushed his hair out of his eyes. That's when the realization hit me. He was in a coma. The thought sickened me, so I sat down in the chair next to the bed. I held his hand in mine and tears came to my eyes. What if he never woke up? That thought made me cry even harder.
"Please wake up Carter. I love you." I said in a tear choked voice. I sat there with him for what seemed like hours with our hands together.
I suddenly heard footsteps and voices in the hallway. I had no time to react before my doctor stepped into the room.
"There you are! You're supposed to be resting!" I didn't budge from my chair.
"You can visit later, but you need rest Emily." The doctor sighed impatiently.
"I can't leave him." I said quietly.
"Like I said, you can visit him later, now let's go." I knew there was no point in arguing, so I slowly got up and left the room. The doctor walked me back to my room, and when I stepped inside, I was very surprised to see that I had a visitor.....
