They had planned it out right then and there, Charlotte's lifeless body still under the sheet. They were doing it for her, once and for all. Except, they had a better plan this time. They paid their last respects to their dear friend, and then put the plan into action.
They all said a last farewell to Charlotte, before exiting her hospital room. The group navigated their way through the hospital. There was no stopping them now. They reached the main floor of the hospital. So far, they had gone unnoticed. They were about to suavely make their way past the reception desk, when she just had to look up at them. She asked where they were going to, but nobody answered. They just kept on walking.
They made it out of the front exit, and it was pouring. That certainly did not stop them. It didn't even stop Tabitha, who knew that her cast would be destroyed. They were an odd looking bunch, getting looks from strangers bustling in the rain. But that didn't matter to them. Not now at least.
The atmosphere of this day seemed vaguely familiar. The pouring rain brought back the memories of soaked sneakers and dripping hair. They were the only ones on the street walking, which made it seem even more eerie. The other pedestrians were hiding in their coats and running while holding a book or newspaper over their head.
Nobody said a word as they slowly made their way to their impending doom. They were all able to remember the way. A sudden car drove by the curb, splashing all of them. But, not even that could faze them in the slightest bit. As they walked, there started to be less people. Despite the fact that Tabitha's cast was growing soggy, she trudged on without a complaint. Why would that stop her at this point? They had all already lost so much.
Time seemed to go in slow motion. They were almost there. By now, the doctor was probably looking for them. But by the time that a real search would start up, they would be long gone. The same questions always circled their minds. Why doesn't anybody care? Why does life have to be so meaningless and cruel? These were the kind of questions that drove them further.
They were almost there. There was nobody around, and all they had were streetlights to illuminate their path. They could finally see it. That guard rail that had started this all. Anticipation grew inside them as they got nearer and nearer. It was finally time. They all walked the steps that they would ever take, up to that guard rail.
In unison, they all raised one foot to the base. They stared down at the murky water, 25 stories below. They then raised a second foot to the base. Tabitha didn't care that her cast was about to fall off. They all joined hands once again. They didn't bother to say farewell, because they would be with each other soon enough. Emily squeezed Carter's hand extra tight, as if saying a final I love you. They all took a deep breath, their final breaths.
As if some sort of command was given, they all hurtled themselves over that guard rail. They fell, all 25 stories, their hands joined together. They all hit the icy cold water like a ton of bricks. They had done it.
They were free at last.
