The cold wind blew through my hair. "Well, this is it Carter." I thought to myself. I was about to put my second foot at the base of the guard rail, when I heard a voice call out from behind me.
"Hey I know what you're thinking! Please don't do it!" I turned around to face her, waiting for her to say something else. She was a tallish girl with ginger hair and beautiful blue eyes.
"Please come down from there!" She called, this time walking a bit closer. My thoughts raced through my mind.
"Why do you care? You don't even know me!" I called to her.
"Well, actually I do." I thought hard. I'd never seen this girl before in my life.
"Just please come down so I can talk to you." Her voice was calm, but I could tell that she was nervous. I hesitated for a moment before slowly stepping down from the guard rail. To my surprise, she ran up and embraced me tightly. She could tell that I was clearly taken aback, so she let go of me.
"I'm sorry.." She stammered. I'm just so glad that you didn't jump." She was glad that I didn't jump? Did somebody really care about me after all?
"My name is Emily Sans and I go to West Side middle school. Your name is Carter Brown and you go to West Side middle school." How did she know that? That's when I remembered. I had seen her before in a few of my classes. I've always had a crush on her, but I never knew if she felt the same way. She was funny and intelligent and she was always so kind to anybody she talked to.
"Okay, where do I even start?" She took a deep breath and began speaking again.
"To tell you the truth, I came here to do the exact same thing." I was completely shocked. Emily? Kill herself? It just seemed so unlikely!
"I have to show you something," She said more quietly this time. She carefully rolled up both of her sleeves and turned over her arms, exposing her forearms. My mouth gaped open. There were cuts all the way up her arms. The sad part was, they looked pretty fresh too.
"Y-you did that to yourself?" I stammered slowly. She nodded her head, and I knew she wasn't lying. This time, I was the one to embrace her.
"Oh god Emily.. I'm so sorry.."
"Don't be," She said coldly. I then guessed it was my turn to say why I came there. I told her all about the death of my dad, and the constant problems that I faced at school.
"God, did Jackson really do that to you!?" She asked in bewilderment. Emily was starting to make me feel a whole lot better, but sadness still remained inside me.
"You know you could have just let me jump," I said.
"But why? You're such a great person and I'm honestly so glad that I ran into you!" I could tell that she meant every word she said and it brought tears to my eyes.
"Up until now, I thought that I had nobody that cared about me at all," I said, choking back tears.
"Well, now you have somebody who does." She replied. I looked her straight in the eyes and she just looked right back. This is my chance! I thought to myself. I didn't hesitate and I leaned right in and kissed her. Every bit of it was wonderful. She rest her head on my shoulder and I didn't even have time to think when I saw a figure, walking in the distance....
