I was falling. The air whooshed around me and I felt like I was moving in slow motion. I turned my head to see the others falling right with me. This was the end. I closed my eyes and waited for impact. I hit the pavement, pain roaring through my body. Around me, I heard the sickening crack of bones. As I lie there, I hear commotion all around us. I manage to lift my head up and look around. People were rushing around and panicking. Even though I felt pain, I managed to force myself up. I quickly scanned my body. To me, it was remarkable because it seemed that I had no broken limbs. I looked around the area of where I had fallen. There was a pool of blood surrounding Charlotte's body. Carter's arm was twisted at an unnatural angle. I couldn't help it. I turned away and vomited. I wiped my mouth on the sleeve of my sweatshirt. The pain was so intense. Right as I saw ambulances rolling up, I passed out.
I woke up to the sound of low voices and dim lights. I squinted my eyes and noticed what seemed to be a doctor in the corner, talking to a very professional looking woman. Judging by the doctor, I was able to guess that I was in some sort of hospital. The doctor noticed me stirring, and halted his conversation.
"Ah, Mark, you're awake." He spoke in a monotone of a voice that I already didn't like.
"How are you feeling?" I glanced down at my body in the hospital bed. In all honesty, my body felt really numb. The doctor could tell that I was not good, so he didn't wait to let me answer before speaking again.
"Here today I have an important visitor for you." He motioned towards the lady and she smiled. The doctor then left the room, leaving it with just me and her. The lady looked kind enough, and she walked over to my bed and sat down in a chair. She crossed one leg over the other, and clicked a pen while holding a clipboard in her other hand.
"Hello Mark, my name is Sarah and I'm your social worker." Social worker? The only experience that I had ever had with a social worker was when I was really young. I remember that day vividly.
I must have been about six, and I was sitting on the living room floor playing with some toys. My mom rushed around the house, a cigarette in one hand and using the other to pick up objects strewn about. She surveyed the area and then came over and straightened out my clothes so that I would look more presentable. When I got older, I was able to figure out that my mom was trying to make the house look its best so that the incoming social worker would not take me away from her. I'm still surprised to this day that she was able to get by.
I snapped back to reality.
"I'm going to ask you some questions, if that's alright?" I nodded my head, and she scribbled something down on the clipboard.
"I would like you to answer as honestly as possible, and remember that you don't have to be uncomfortable, because I'm only here to help." I nodded my head again. I'm a pretty honest guy, but then again I didn't even know what kind of questions were coming.
"What do you look for in a family?" I thought hard. I honestly had no idea what it was even like to have a loving family.
"Well, I've never really had family around..so I'm not sure." The questioning went on for a long time. She asked me what my interests were, what I liked to do, who I hung out with.. that kind of stuff. After she was done, she clicked her pen closed and cleared her throat.
"Now, I have some very tragic news that I know will be hard to accept." She paused for a moment, as if asking me permission to keep going.
"We were able to locate your mother." They had finally found my mom? Normally when she leaves for awhile it leaves me unfazed. She took a deep breath and went on.
"We found her at a shady residence with gun wounds to the head, along with drugs in her system. We were able to assume that she had been shot by somebody there. I'm sorry Mark, but she didn't make it." I felt all of the blood drain from my face and my mouth became as dry as cotton. Why was I even surprised? I somehow knew she would end up like that.
"I'm very sorry for your loss." Sarah looked very sympathetic as she looked down at her feet. I felt a single tear stream down my face. I was angry, that my own mother had failed me.
"We are going to get a foster home lined up for you, since you have no immediate family." A foster home? Everything I had heard about foster homes made them sound terrible! Anger coursed through my body.
"Get out." I said through gritted teeth. Sarah looked taken aback.
"I'll give you some time alone then." She quickly rose from her chair, and left the room. Tears began pouring from my eyes as I seethed with anger. My body began convulsing, and I didn't know what was happening.
I couldn't control myself as everything went black.......
