After Noah taught us the basics, we got our boards and swam out about 100 feet from shore.
Katie was anxiously looking at the water beneath us.
"Are there any... Uh, sharks?" She nervously questioned.
Noah laughed, "Of course! Sharks are everywhere. Just make sure you don't get really cut up on coral and bleed all over, thats the main cause of shark attacks. Don't worry about it, the coral reef is a good 30 feet below us, there's no way that you'll be able to reach it."
Katie nodded but still looked into the water with searching eyes.
"The sharks are like bees, leave them alone and they'll leave you alone," Michael soothed, but Katie seemed extremely unconvinced.
"Yeah, tell that to Bethany Hamilton," She countered.
Michael chuckled, "Its fine, attacks are very rare. Like, one in a million."
Finally, Katie calmed and sat up on her board, letting her legs dangle in the water.
Noah nodded at her, giving her a reassuring smile, "If you move your legs in circles, there's an even smaller chance that a shark will mistake you as a fish."
Katie instantly starts moving her legs like Noah instructed.
"Ok, now that that's settled," Noah started, "Let's surf!"

2 Hours and a lot of huge waves later, we were all pretty exhausted.
"Let's each do one more, but ride it all the way up to the beach," Noah called to us, since we were all spread out.
"I call going first!" Katie eagerly exclaimed.
A wave approached her and she paddled a bit until in reached her, then she climbed up steadily and rode it out.
We all cheered her on as she fell off the board in the shallower water, only reaching her knees.
She gave us a thumbs up and a grin.
Next was Michael. He did the same, but didn't fall until his board went up onto the sand, and then he face planted the beach, getting a mouth full for sure.
Calum was next, and just as he was about to go I told him, "Don't let me show you up!"
He laughed and started to paddle.
The wave picked up and carried him as he stood, but then it grew and grew and then barreled over him, knocking him off and swooping him into the undertow of the wave.
It was silent as we stated and waited for him to resurface.
But I couldn't take it any longer, I quickly paddled out to where the wave took him under and grabbed his board.
I saw Calum, but it looked like he was stuck.
His leash (the part that wraps on your leg and connects to the board so it doesn't float away without you) somehow got caught on something.
Just as I was about to dive under to help, he broke free and quickly swam up to the surface.
Once he got up, he gasped for air and held tightly onto his board.
"Oh my god Cal, are you okay?" Noah said once he got to us.
Cal coughed a bit and then said, "Damn, that was terrifying."
