15. Best I Ever Had

JaciLake Wylie, NC Present

Exhausted after their day on the lake, everyone turned in early. The twins and I cleaned up after the feast and sat by the pool taking on a pot of coffee and left over strawberry shortcake. We sat for a while in silence looking over the lake. The moon showed its way through the clouds on to the mirrored water.

“Look, the clouds make some sort of shape I can’t quite make it out. It kind of looks like a heart, doesn’t it?” Jade pointed at the sky.

I looked up. “Yes, another message from the man upstairs, maybe...”

The girls both stared at me with confusion, then giggled. “What are you talking about?” Jema asked.

This was hard to speak of, but sometimes it did help in the worst of times to refer to my past, which made the trouble between Bobby and I seem like a waste of emotion.

“When I was eighteen I was completely in love with this guy. He was perfect. I really wish you both could have met him, or I truly wish you will one day meet someone like him who will treat you with respect and love you unconditionally as he did me. Imagine the perfect guy. He was the epitome of it, times ten.

“The summer after my first year in college, my prince and I weren’t getting along too well though. I was for certain he was falling out of love with me. On our two year anniversary he didn’t call. I was at my house and his sister, Allison was with me.

“Allison was my age and a good friend of mine. I had known her way before I ever met her brother. Our friend Audrey had called to tell us that she was spontaneously going to throw a party since her parents were out of town.

“Allison and I hurried to get ready, and got in Allison’s car to drive over to Audrey’s. On the way there Allison and I both noticed the moon. It was shining so brightly. Like tonight, the clouds formed a perfect shape around the moon. It was in the shape of a cross.

“My first thought in which I spoke out loud to Allison was that I hoped that this didn’t mean something bad was going to happen. I remember she just looked at me and said nothing.

“A week later, Audrey and I had set out to dress Allison and another friend of ours Danielle for a party. Audrey and I had the eye for standing out and we just wanted to use them as our Barbie dolls for the night. I told them they couldn’t wear anything that they would wear to church.

“We were all at my house getting ready and to my surprise Mav, my prince charming, showed up on my door step to surprise me. I was so happy. Anytime Mav walked into a room, I was a lost cause. No matter how mad I was at him or irritated, when I saw his bright smile and crystal blue eyes I was a goner! We all went to the party together that night, and had a great time. Too good of a time actually, I ended up getting sick!

“The next night, our last night, Mav took me out. I will never forget that night. I had my favorite outfit on. I was wearing my hot pink suede skirt with my dark blue jean jacket. I was drenched in rhinestones from head to toe literally. I wish I could remember exactly what he was wearing that night. All I can remember was his smile and his blue eyes.

“Mav and I went to one of my favorite restaurants. Afterwards we stopped by a friend’s house and then decided to call it a night. We went to my house to watch a movie, but the movie never got watched. It was every bit of perfect.

“The thing I remember most and will never forget was falling asleep in his arms with my head upon his chest. I listened to his heart beat as I fell asleep that night. The next day he had to leave. He was in the Coast Guard and stationed in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.”
