26. Happy In The Meantime

I staggered up the stairs to my room, regretting my small breakdown. Inside I undressed and wrapped up in my white robe. I barely got comfortable on my bed when there was a knock at the door.

“Yes...” I waited, wondering who it was. The door cracked and Toby peered in.

“Are you going to bed?” He caught me off guard, and I immediately sat up.

“No...come in.” I sighed. “Honestly, I’m not even tired.” I ran my hand through my hair. “Good.” He walked into my room and leaned up against the dresser. I watched him curiously as he picked a lily out of the crystal vase that sat on my dresser. He moved the stem back and forth between his fingers.

“I was wondering if you might want to escape, for the night?”

I looked at him puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“It’s gotten pretty heavy around here, and I think what you need is a night to just be you and not the rock star.” He paused with a smirk.

I bit my lip and looked away. I had to admit that it would be nice to just forget all the drama for one night. Tomorrow I could do the concert and be finished with this fiasco.

I looked back at Toby. “Yea, I think you’re right.” I stood up from the bed within inches from the enemy who now seemed to be switching sides. “Sorry...” I cautiously backed away. “Um, although there maybe one slight problem with this plan...”

Toby cocked his head.

“I don’t think this is going to go over too well with Eddie.”

He bowed slightly holding the lily out for me to take. “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of him.”

I smiled easily at his kind gesture and took the flower.

“Just be ready in ten, okay?” He began to walk towards the door and stopped to take in one final over view of the room. “Nice, by the way.” He motioned around the room while carefully slipping into the hallway.

The others were already downstairs when I was finished getting ready. I had dressed in a pair of jeans with designer holes and a white tank. The place I had in mind had no dress code. Besides, tonight I was going out as myself, the girl who truly didn’t care if I made the fashion’s best dressed list.

The twins and Toby were sitting at the bottom of the stairs and looked up when I approached.

“So where did you have in mind?” Jade stood up.

I stopped half way down the staircase. “Well...I thought we could go to Belmont.”

A look of horror came over Jema’s face. “You wanna go to Belmont?”

“Why not?”

“I thought we were going to go to Charlotte or some place with class at least.” She growled as she plopped back onto the steps.

I reached the bottom of the staircase.

“What’s in Belmont?” Toby asked.

“What’s not in Belmont, is an easier question to answer.” I giggled.

Jema rolled her eyes. “I just thought you would want to take Toby somewhere nice, Jaci.”

“Hold on,” Toby intervened. “Tonight is Jaci’s time to get away from all the stress, let’s not create any.” He focused on Jema.

“Yea, this field trip is for me.” I winked playfully. “Besides I think Toby will like this place.” I focused on him. “I think it’s your style.”
