16. In The Midnight Hour

The next morning all was well. After my blast from the past story telling for the twins, I was feeling a bit more down to earth and not so much like the girl in the headlines of the tabloids.

The whole house hold gathered for breakfast on the patio and everyone seemed to be in a better mood. The whole crew decided to go with me and the twins on our boat outing for the day. My younger cousins followed behind on the jet skis. Eddie stayed behind to make phone calls, after all, this really wasn’t a vacation for him. He still had plenty of work to do on the upcoming concert.

The day was glorious and bright. It was filled with laughter and old stories from when I was a child. The girls and I sunbathed all morning on the front of the boat while the rest of my family took turns playing cards and taking dips in the lake. In the afternoon everyone had gotten a little liquid courage in them from the frozen concoctions and decided to try water skiing. I enjoyed watching from the boat at everyone falling off the skies, but there weren’t nearly enough daiquiris in the boat for me to give it a try. Furthermore I knew that if I hurt myself, Eddie would kill me! The twins gave it a try, and seemed to be better than most, even though they had devoured most of the daiquiris.

After the death defying stunts we were all worn out. My belly hurt from laughing so much. The family and the girls had all sprawled out along the boat. We anchored the boat at the hot hole where a few parties were already going on. Some of the men went onto the island as well to find a spot to fish, and the women made another batch of daiquiris. I didn’t dare step foot on the island, there were too many people.

The twins and I lounged on the front of the boat. Of course we attracted more attention than I cared for, boats full of guys began to anchor around us. I kept my shades on trying to keep my identity hidden. It was nice to lay with my eyes closed and listen to the sounds of different radios playing in the background and the laughter and voices from others around me and the feel of the soft rock of the boat.

“Jaci, your phone is ringing!” My mom yelled from the back of the boat.

I laid there in hopes that it would stop ringing or my mom would assume I was napping.

“Jaci, do you hear me? Come get this thing!”

With an annoyed sigh, I got up and headed to the back of the boat where my mom and her sister sat.

My purse was lying in the seat beside my mom. I dug through the bag while my mom made comments about how I didn’t need to carry a purse that big, and that I was going to have back problems when I got older. I just rolled my eyes, and finally found my phone which of course had stopped ringing. I checked the missed calls and to my surprise it was Elisa.

I immediately redialed the number. It rang only once before Elisa answered.

“Hello, were you going to ever call me and tell me you were in town?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. It felt good to hear her voice. I hadn’t seen Elisa since her wedding. It was one of the only times I got to come home this past year to be a bridesmaid.

“I’m sorry, I just got home two days ago and things have been a little crazy.”

“Yea, I saw that interview last night on STARS. What was that all about? Are you really dating that Bobby guy?”

“No, I’m not! But can you come and hang with us, and I will explain everything?” I twiddled my hair.

“That’s why I was calling, me and Paul are heading down to the lake to eat and have a few drinks at The Shack. You guys want to meet us?” Her voice trailed off at the end.
