10. Steal My Sunshine

When we all pulled into the gas station on New Hope Road heading south, I began to worry slightly. Part of me was thankful that I had made it this far without my parents figuring out my lie. The other part of me was anxious, knowing that I would be much safer from them when I crossed the line into South Carolina.

Mav looked at me before he got out of the driver’s seat of the Camero. “Do you want anything?”

“Yea, a Sun Drop.” I said nervously.

He smiled. “It’s going to be okay. Don’t worry. We’ll only be gone for a few days.”

“I know.” I sighed. “I just feel dumb now knowing that no one else had to lie to their parents.”

“Yea. You don’t think they would have let you come?”

“I don’t know. Audrey had convinced me that they wouldn’t, and I thought that Danielle would be giving her parents the same story. Then I found out that she told the truth, and I had already told mine the lie.” I sighed again. “So then I was stuck.”

“Either way I’m sure we can get by with a little white lie. Don’t worry.” He leaned over and kissed me on the forehead before getting out of the car.

Maybe everything would be okay. I just didn’t feel right lying. I shouldn’t have, and if I get away with this one I promised myself that I would never do it again. It was way too stressful. If I had only known, but I couldn’t change it now.

I had told my parents that us, girls, would be staying at the beach with Brooklyn, a girl that had graduated a year before us and had moved down to the beach. She was known for being a wild child. There wasn’t much Brooklyn hadn’t done. I assured my parents that Brooklyn’s mom would be visiting so there would be no mischief. My parents didn’t know her mom and I was surprised that they didn’t ask for a phone number to back up my story. I did tell them too, that Mav and his friends would be at the beach as well. I guess they didn’t ask any questions since the rest of the girls were going and my parents trusted Mav a lot.

I looked over to Audrey’s car. Allison was sitting shot gun and Danielle was in the back seat. Both seemed to be laughing and at ease while Audrey had gone into the store to get snacks and drinks for her passengers. Part of me wished I could ride with them, but I got to see them all the time. Mav was only here every two weeks, so our time together was valuable, and any moment I could spend with him I would.

The drive down to Myrtle Beach was long and hot under the beaming sun with the T-tops off. I had already worked on a good tan by the time we arrived at the camp ground. We and located the Hartmann’s camper.

Audrey, Danielle, Allison, and I sat at a picnic table in the scorching sun watching Mav set the camper up for us. Justin and Brian were with us, and tried to help Mav a little, but mostly just threw around a basketball while making sarcastic remarks at Mav.

It took Mav almost an hour to get everything set up. He was dripping with sweat when he was finished. The camper would take a while to cool off. Audrey took it upon herself to call Brooklyn and see if we could come over to take showers.

I walked into Brooklyn’s guest bedroom. The bed was disarrayed. Clothes dispersed everywhere, and now the floor was covered with our bags as well. I had also decided to leave my things at Brooklyn’s even though I probably wouldn’t be staying there. It still felt like I should leave my stuff there in my attempt to make the lie somewhat true to myself. I also hoped that maybe Brooklyn’s mom would happen to show up for a visit and the lie would become reality.

I walked into Brooklyn’s room while I waited for my turn on the shower. She was getting ready for work. She was just a little taller than me, thin, but not lacking in the chest region whatsoever. She had long almost black hair. She was really cute with her button nose and freckled tan skin, and had been popular back in high school. Brooklyn was also somewhat of a hell raiser and had a few stories to tell, but looking at her you would never have guessed it. Guess that’s why she always seemed to get away with her crazy ways. But I thought she was loads of fun.
