22. Heart of Gold
I awoke to a knock at the door. Still dressed for a day at the lake I slithered out of my bed. I thought it would be the twins ready for another tour on the boat or maybe Bobby trying to score some extra points by making me breakfast in bed, but I never expected to see my mom standing there.
She stood slightly shorter than me with her long blonde hair and sparkling green eyes. Her smile was soothing, so much so that it made a slight smile on my face even though I was never a morning person.
“Come in.” I pushed the door open a bit further and went back to my fluffy bed crawling back in and surrounding the pillows around me. My mom took a seat on the edge of my bed.
“I haven’t really got to talk to you since you’ve been home.” She patted my leg. “You’ve got a lot going on don’t you?” She smiled again.
“Yeah, it’s been a little crazy, but I think it will all blow over once the concert is behind me.” I tried to sound confident but the fact was that I didn’t even know if I believed myself.
“Guess you know this business better than I do, but you know you can always blow off steam with me. You can tell me anything and I promise it won’t end up in the papers.” She giggled as did I.
“But I do have to ask one thing, do you really like this Bobby character? And why is that reporter following you around?”
I chuckled. “Mom, that’s two questions.”
She gave me a slight stern look and then fell back to her comfortable smile. “I just get worried when your entourage is consisting of more men than women.” She winked.
I sighed. “I don’t know. Back in L.A, I really was falling for Bobby, but now I don’t know.” I shook my head staring up at my cathedral ceilings.
“It’s just hard to know who you can trust with your money, much less your heart, you know?” I shrugged.
“I can understand in a way. Just pray about it. God will let you know when the time is right, no need to rush anything or hold anything back either.” She tilted her head as she examined my face. “So, who is this reporter, Toby?”
“Let’s just say it’s crucial that he be here, or otherwise he wouldn’t. You know how I like my privacy.” I slid off the bed.
“That’s why I thought it was odd, but you know what’s best I suppose.” She hopped off the bed and began to walk to the door to exit.
“Wait, mom. Did I just hear you right?” I smirked.
“Don’t ask me to repeat it.” And she was gone.
By the time I showered and made my way down to the pool, it was mid afternoon. My family and friends were all conversing. The adults sat at tables under huge umbrellas, and the kids were playing a game of corn hole which included Toby.
I stopped just outside of the French doors watching his interaction with my cousins.
“I was wondering when you would be joining us?” Bobby snuck up from behind.
“Oh, well I slept in and got a late start.”
“Would you like to take a walk with me?” He asked as he took my hand.
“Sure.”
We walked towards the outer perimeter of the land away from everyone else.It was another bright and beautiful day in North Carolina. I guided Bobby towards my mother’s flower garden on the West end of the lot. We barely spoke as we walked till we reached the garden.
