21. Done All Wrong
“So what is it that you want to know?”I sat down on the white leather seat of the boat.
Toby looked over at me through his dark black shades and smirked. “All work and no play?”
“That was the point of a vacation. But you have now made this difficult for me so why don’t we just get on with it?” I tipped my shades down at him.
“ Jacinda, I am sure Toby would not mind having a day on the lake before you guys get down to business, is that not right?” Bobby approached with his accent that made everything calm but awkward.
I looked up and smiled slightly at his thoughtfulness, and then back to the reporter who was basking in my sun.
“I’ve got nothing but time.” Toby smiled.
My lips pursed as I turned and followed Bobby to the back of the boat.
Eddie was our captain for the day as we pulled up to the Hot Hole which was already lined with boats around the small island.
“So this is... the Hot Hole?” Bobby looked around questionably to appraise the view.
I followed his stare. “Yea, this is it.”
“Well, shall we soak up the sun, or go for a swim?” He placed his arm around me and pulled me closer.
“I think you guys should first try one of these!” Jade appeared from the cabin underneath with a pitcher of margaritas. Jema followed close behind carrying two drinks in hand topped off with little umbrellas.
I laughed. “Do you girls think of anything other than drinking?”
“You’re on vacation! Better yet, we’re on vacation!” Jade continued to the front of the boat to join Toby. Jema followed offering up one of her drinks to him, and Eddie of course made his way as well.
I watched my closest friends sway to the radio, and laugh as they talked and sipped, but my eyes kept wondering to the enemy. I knew he was mentally noting every detail, and I didn’t like it. I wondered how he would later write his column. Would he keep the story straight or blow it out of proportion by describing a bigger boat or a party consumed of drugs with alcohol pouring from every hand...I couldn’t let him destroy me.
Bobby nudged my arm. “Jacinda, calm down. He is all talk and no action. Besides what could you possibly have hidden in your closet?”
I turned to look at him and then back at Toby. “You’re right.” I smiled as I returned to Bobby’s brown eyes. “Let’s swim.”
The day ended up not being too stressful. The twins entertained Toby, and it was more entertaining for the rest of us as we watched. They tried very hard to intoxicate him with tequila and their blustering personalities, but while they were busy dancing or giggling, he would dump his drink overboard. So the twins ended up tipsy while Toby stayed completely sober.
We watched from the boat as the sun set and bon fires began to burn up the moon lit sky as music played through the darkness. Bobby and I sat with the others on the front of the boat as the twins told ridiculous stories from their childhood, and Eddie recalling his moments when he lived in Florida trying to make it as a producer on his own. Bobby even shared stories about living in England as the twins mocked his accent and choice of words in their drunken state.
“So what about you, Jaci? Tell us a story from your past.” Toby edged his words out.
“Like what?” I mumbled as I tried to not to make eye contact.
“Well, tell us something about that Konstance guy. Was he really the guy who made our princess bad?” He smiled condescendingly.
I gritted my teeth and flexed my jaw, that movement in itself made me think of Konstance.
