9. Jealous Again
My heart began to palpitate faster as I saw the silver Camero pull into the circular drive of my grandparent’s house. I was out the door and down the steps and into his arms before he could get his door shut on the sports car.
I loved the way he held me in his arms. He was like my own personal jungle gym. I could jump up in his arms, with my arms wrapped around his neck and my legs wrapped around his waist. This is the way I always greeted Mav.
I pulled back my face to look into his deep crystal blue eyes and then closed mine as I went in for a kiss. I loved our kisses. Each one seemed special. Maybe it was because I only saw him every two weeks or because I was so madly in love with him. The kiss would have lasted longer if I hadn’t heard the roar of an old engine.
I pulled away and looked over Mav’s shoulder. He looked back too and we both were a little shocked to see a red truck parked behind the Camero. I slowly unlocked my legs from his waist, and Mav slowly lowered me to the ground. My eyes were fixed on the truck. My blood boiled. How dare he show up after the stunt he pulled a few weeks ago. Mav chuckled and that eased my madness a little.
“I’ll walk you inside.” I looked back at the truck and waved for him to wait. Then I walked with Mav hand in hand up to my grandparent’s house. This would be the first time Mav would be meeting them, and how awkward this was now with Jackson sitting in the drive way.
When Mav and I entered my grandparent’s house, you couldn’t help but to be taken back by the thirty-six deer heads lined along the wall. Along with other random stuffed furry creatures. My grandfather sat just ahead of us as he always did at the dining room table with all kinds of books and gadgets sitting around him.
“Oh, hell Jaci! What’s going on out there?” He grumbled, but it also sounded as if humor was in his voice. I’m sure he found this amusing.
“Oh, nothing. I’ll take care of that, but I wanted to introduce you to Mav.” I turned back to Mav and motioned for him to enter. “This is my grandpa.”
“Come on in. I’ll keep him entertained while you deal with that out there, or we’ll just watch you out there for entertainment.” He chuckled as he lit a cigarette.
“Ha! Funny.” I said sarcastically as I turned to go back out the door.
It was awkward again, knowing that Mav and grandpa could see me out the windows. I prayed that Jackson wouldn’t do anything embarrassing. I had never had to hit a guy before, but I sure wanted to lay one on Jackson.
I walked at a stiff and brisk pace to the truck, and Jackson was already out of his truck leaning on the door staring at the shiny Camero, and then looked at me as I approached. I stood a good five feet away from him and crossed my arms, looking at him with irritation. He didn’t speak.
“What? What Jackson, why are you here?” I began to tap my foot. He’s eyes began to water, and that subsided my anger just a bit. I wasn’t sure if I could hit him if he was already crying. “You know you’re lucky I’m even talking to you after the stunt you pulled a few weeks ago!”
“I know.” He struggled with his words. “He’s not mad at me for showing up here?”
“No. He doesn’t care what an immature boy does. What do you want?”
“I just wanted to know if you’re happy?” He’s eye flashed to the ground and then back to me.
“Yes, I’m very happy.”
“I thought you didn’t want a boyfriend, so you could enjoy your senior year.” He all of a sudden became skeptical.
“With Mav it’s different. He lets me go out with my friends. I don’t have to ask him for permission, and he doesn’t question me.”
