Chapter Sixteen
The Undead
-Duke’s Point of View-
I follow Eva to her room after dinner, she tells me how her and William had a long chat and I can see the happiness in her eyes. I’m so glad that I can be a part of Eva smiling, she deserves to have the burdens taken away from her and I’m grateful to William to talking with her like that. I tell her I’ll just take a shower and be then join her which she says she’s fine with since she needs to take one too but as I enter my room I see Lloyd already standing here.
His red eyes can be seen in the darkness and his black clothes cover him like a cloak. Calista steps out from next to him and walks over to me.
“Can you please come with us?” She asks. They had left dinner early and I guess for whatever reason they left early they’re here now about.
I nod and Lloyd walks past me with Calista, I follow them and we walk out of the mansion, through the gardens and to the graveyard. It’s dark and cold outside, the graveyard has a haunting but mysterious aura, I wonder why I’ve been brought here.
“I know you will probably find this very weird but I wanted to tell you first before I try and tell Eva.” Lloyd says and we stop before Zaebos’ grave.
What are we doing here? I look confused at the dug up grave of Zaebos and turn to Lloyd. “Please don’t freak out.” Calista pleads and I hear a cawing sound.
I lift my head up to the sound and see a black bird fly through the air and land on Lloyd’s shoulder. It’s Zaebos but he’s totally changed. Feathers are missing, bones stick out and mud covers him. His eyes are as blood red as Lloyd’s. I can’t accept it but deep down I know what’s going on.
Lloyd starts to explain, “When you were in the room, Zaebos flew to me when I turned back into a vampire and he told me to turn him. I’ve never turned anyone before, let alone an animal but he insisted. I tried anyway and when Zaebos was shot I thought it must’ve not worked because technically an ice shard shouldn’t have killed him. Indeed it did but then he re-awoke as the Undead. I have never seen an Undead bird before, I’ve only ever seen Undead cats or dogs. Anyway, he’s still weak, he needs to get used to his new strength and bloodlust but he wants to see Eva. I don’t know how I should break this to her.”
“Break what to me?” A voice asks and I spin around to see Eva step out from behind a tombstone a little further away. I look at Lloyd who’s expression hasn’t changed but Calista looks worried.
“Um… there’s some good news.” I say, I believe it is good at least.
Eva steps closer and Zaebos caws. Her eyes widen and tears instantly fall down her cheeks, “Z-Zaebos?” Her voice shakes and Zaebos caws again, flapping over to her. Eva cries with laughter, hugging him to her body. He flaps his wings and she lets go of him so he can fly around her happily. “I can’t believe this! You’ve alive!”She cries, sobbing with happiness. Zaebos calms down and he perches on her forearm. She strokes him gently with a smile that reaches from ear to ear.
“Well not alive technically…” Lloyd says and explains what he explained to me.
We wait for Eva’s reaction. She looks at us and grins proudly, “I have the coolest companion on this whole planet.” She says and Zaebos caws happily to hear this. I had a feeling she would react this way and I’m glad she did.
……………………….
-Eva’s Point of View-
I still can’t believe Zaebos is Undead, I thanked Lloyd greatly for turning Zaebos but he just denied needing to be thanked. Zaebos stinks a little so Duke and I wash him together. Some of his feathers are missing and at first it made me worry but then I after seeing him fly so freely and easily I realise he’s much stronger now and plus, it looks awesome.
Zaebos cheekily tries to escape his bath and gives Duke and I hell, it’s okay for him because he can sleep all tomorrow but Duke and I have to go on our mission tomorrow. We eventually finish washing Zaebos and Duke and I come up with the idea of keeping Zaebos’ tombstone but turning it into a mini crypt where he can sleep during the day. It sucks that I will only see Zaebos at night but it’s better than not having him at all. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve all this happiness but I’m determined to enjoy it while it lasts. I can feel the end of the war drawing closer, I don’t know what I’ll do when it’s actually over and I know it will be different but I believe it’s going to be a good different.

A mini chapter, I decided instead of killing off one of my favourite characters that I would add a twist. I hope you like it :))))))
