Chapter Twenty Three
The Light and Dark
-Eva’s Point of View-
“Feel like a last speech, Evangeline?” Henry Roht says into the microphone and to the crowd but the question is for me.
I slightly nod my head, I’ve never been an inspirational speaker, I can’t even make small talk with people but in this moment, I need to speak. I need to make sure my death isn’t in vain. The crowd jeers and Henry doesn’t hand me the microphone so I take a breath and shout, “Already, two have died for me. One who knew me for years and another who had only met me a few days ago. One will miraculously live on but the other cannot. They were my friends, they protected me and I know you’re out there, my family and I’m telling you not to save me. I won’t have another life taken because of me.”
The crowd boos and hisses, “Who would want to save you?”, “What idiots would die for you?” I heard people shout. I don’t care about them; as long as the ones I wanted to hear it heard it I’m fine. I can’t see them, they’ve thought this out very well but they can’t take the chance, they can’t risk their lives for me.
I swallow, my mouth dry I drop my head but Henry grabs my fringe and tilts my head up so I can see the crowd, “You have to watch, watch the new rulers of the world. The good people, the light powered.” He says.
I notice a movement from on top a building, I can’t see what it is but something caught in the sunlight. It looks as if the sky itself might have moved for a second but then went back to normal.
I feel cold metal on my forehead as a gun is pointed to it. I’ve run out of time, my pulse races, Don’t do anything, don’t do anything! I scream on the inside. I hear a clicking sound, this is it.
“STOP!” Someone shouts from on top of a building. My heart stops as everyone stops to look to a building where the sound came from and there stands Valentine, Jett, Darcy, Blade and Amara. My heart leaps for joy, deep down I had wished this would happen. My temporal joy is replaced with fear, they’re safe up there for now, they can escape easily but where the hell is Duke?
“Eva, you’re not dying today! You’ll die an old woman with family and friend’s surrounding you! No one is going to lay a finger on my best friend!” Jett screams from on top the building.
A smile creeps its way on my lips as I look at my best friend. Henry shoves me forward but then pulls me back, the gun hitting my head. “There you are Ikol. I knew you couldn’t miss this opportunity. Hate to break it to you, boy, but your friend is in a bit of a bad situation here. I don’t think she’ll be making it past this hour.” Henry calls up to Valentine and Jett.
“She will!” Someone shouts from the crowd, the crowd disperses to reveal Duke.
“Duke, get out of here!” I shout, he’s too close, too vulnerable. He’s in a crowd of Lumin, they’ll kill him!
“I’m not leaving Eva, if you die, I’ll die with you but you won’t because I’m leaving here with the girl I love safe in my arms!” Duke shouts, some people look moved and astonished by Duke’s words but others just look plain disgusted.
“Duke…” I begin, “I love you…so much… but you all can’t die! You need to find peace for everyone, you can’t waste your lives trying to save me!” I cry out to him, those stupid tears returning. I want to run to Duke, for everyone to just disappear and for me to jump into his arms and kiss him with all my heart.
“Eva, shut up! You’re not a waste!” Jett yells, “Am I right guys?” On the building opposite the one they stand upon appear Ebony, Seth, Corbin, Cain, Michael and Walter. Jett raises his fist into the air, they all copy and some people from the crowd join in too, people who I recognized to be fellow Tene.
