Chapter Two- The Hero in some eyes
For what feels like the thousandth time, I check the time. It’s only been 15 minutes since I last checked, finally it’s only 1 hour to go and I’ll be off this slow and tedious mortal plane.
I look at the mortals around me; they’re sitting down patiently in their seats. Some are reading, some sleeping, I find it ironic how oblivious they are to the world around them, they have no idea of the war raging between the powers and have no idea that I, a wanted criminal is sitting among them.
I look to my right; a man is sitting next to me. He’s been snoring loudly for the past 2 hours. I have been really tempted to cast something on him to shut him up but that will only bring attention to me, which is the whole reason I’m on this stupid plane.
Planes used by the people of Atmos are also ridden by some mortals who know about them such as through family and friends but these mortal planes aren’t commonly flown by anyone with powers. Our planes are a lot faster, comfier and more entertaining. Once I reach the land the mortals call America I will catch one of Valentine’s jet planes and fly to the city of Constance, a very old city not known by the puny mortals.
The flight will only take around 45 minutes at the most and then I’ll catch a private limo to the main part of the city, all in a quicker time than this stupid plane has taken to get to my next destination. When I finally do reach Constance it’s mission…stalk down Duke. I frown at the thought; I can’t help but think Duke won’t want to see me. I don’t really pay attention to the media but I’m pretty sure I would be talked about pretty badly on it.
I sigh, bored out of my mind and rest my head against the seat. Something catches my eye and I turn my head to my left to see a little girl staring at me. She clings to the pink plush rabbit in her hands, she’s wearing nothing but pink and looks to be around 5 years old. Her skin is dark her hair is a big tangle of curls.
“Did they hurt?” She murmurs, pointing to her nose where my septum is.
“Not really, if you’re brave enough, they’re fun to get.” I smile, turning my body slightly so I can talk to her.
The girl smiles in return, revealing a few missing teeth. It’s really cute… I lean in closer, brining my voice to a whisper, “I’ll tell you a secret, when I got my first one, I clung to my best friend’s hand because I was so scared.” I don’t know what it is with little children but I enjoy their company. They haven’t experienced the shit in the world yet.
I wink at her as she giggles, hugging her rabbit. The mum notices us and she pulls her daughter closer herself, “Don’t talk to her, she’s bad.”
I roll my eyes, they don’t even know me and I’m ‘bad’.
A commotion a few seats up causes everyone to stop what they’re doing and look over, including me. A man wearing all black with a moustache, sleeve of tattoos and curly hair holds an old lady at gun point in her seat.
What the hell? I thought mortal planes are crazy about security so this stuff doesn’t happen? The whole plane is silent as another person, probably his partner, points his gun in the direction of everyone else. This guy has a shaved head and a small beard with sunglasses.
“Everyone, listen up, we want all of the money you have with you!” The first guy with the olive skin shouts.
The little girl I was talking to lets out a small cry of fear, the two criminals snap their eyes to her. She’s quivering in her mother’s arms, the rabbit squishes between the two.
“Remember what I said, be brave.” I whisper to her, she looks at me with teary eyes but she doesn’t cry out, her mother glares protectively at me.
