Chapter Twelve
The Heritage
Calista’s eyelids move; she moans and shifts in Lloyd’s arms. His deathly pale skin and deep red eyes haven’t changed and although his mouth is closed I doubt his fangs have gone away. His appearance is fearful but he looks at Calista with such protective and loving eyes it’s hard to believe he’s a vampire.
“What happened to the farmer Lloyd?” I ask through the silence.
“I have spent many years perfecting a potion that would reverse my powers as a vampire and turn my into a normal human, the longer I took it, the more it worked. It got to the point where I could see sunlight for the first time in my life. I’ve all of that now.” He doesn’t take his eyes of Calista and he gently strokes her hair. “However, it is worth it for the safety of Calista.”
I think being a vampire is awesome, I’ve been watching vampire movies for years, I would never give up such a power.
Valentine bursts through the door, we’ve only been here for a quarter of an hour and Valentine must’ve dropped everything as soon as he had heard of our return. Duke follows behind him, we are in a spare room and Lloyd sits on the bed holding Calista.
Her eyes open to see Valentine fall to his knees before the bed and hold Calista’s hand. Lloyd shifts himself away from Calista and stands next to Duke and I.
When she realizes who is holding her hand she pulls rips her hand from him and pushes herself to the other side of the bed. Her body hits the bed posts and she scans the room in fear.
“Who are you people?” She cries, her eyes find Lloyd and she relaxes a little, “Lloyd, what’s going on?’
“Calista, you won’t remember me because you were so small when you were taken away from me, but I’m your father.” Valentine says gently.
She looks back at him, the fear returning, “What do you want from me?”
I can’t see Valentine’s face but I know that must’ve hurt him a lot. “Calista, I’ve wanted nothing more than to just be sure of your safety. There hasn’t been a day where I don’t think of your small body is your mother’s arms, or your wonderful smile when I held you in my own arms. I never got to see you grow up and it is my biggest regret, I can see how much of fine woman you have grown into and if it is okay with you, then I would love to get to know my own daughter better.” Valentine’s voice is shaking.
Calista’s eyes soften and she moves closer to Valentine, holding his hand again. I realize from his shaking shoulders that he’s crying.
Duke grabs my hand and pulls Lloyd and I out the room, closing the door quietly behind us. He turns to us when he closes the door, “They probably need their reunion time. There’s only a short while before the sun comes us but we should rest. Lloyd your room is next to Calista’s.” Duke points to the door to the left and Lloyd nods, entering his room.
I watch him as he leaves and a thought crosses my mind, if vampires exist then werewolves, fairies and even dragons must be real too. According to Atmos history they have been extinct for hundreds of years and many just believe them to be myth but perhaps they aren’t entirely extinct.
“Wait!” I call after Lloyd, I run into his room, he is inspecting the windows of the room, “How did you meet Calista?”
Lloyd looks at me, “My kind has been in hiding for years. That’s why my family’s manor is in the middle of nowhere. I’m a hundred and twenty-four years old and for majority of that time I hated what I was. I spent most of it trying to find a way to change. I met Calista one day while hunting, she wasn’t afraid of me. She was fascinated by me, so for a few years while she grew older I perfected my potion and I came to her a s a farm boy. She was 17 and although I was one hundred and one years older than her I fell in love with her. I thought I fooled her with my different appearance but she remembered me but didn’t run away either. She inspires me to not fear my power and to hope for the day where the undead can once again walk alongside the living.” Lloyd says, giving us his love story.
