Chapter Eleven
The Loyalty
My body is frozen; my claws are gripping into the familiar carpet, my eyes glued to the man towering over me. Duke is frozen too but only because he didn’t expect to see a man walk through, I suppose.
William looks at us, confused by seeing two animals randomly in the room. For a few seconds no one moves when William snaps out of his confusion, “How did these animals get in here…?”
Calista stood up and she looks at us, her eyes are red and swollen from crying. Her body is shaking slightly and bruises cover her arms, she has changed out of her long dress and into a bathrobe.
Duke looks at me and meows, What do we do? Act innocent or morph back?
I can’t reply, I can’t trust myself to do anything right now. My emotions are running everywhere in my body, I feel if I try to do something then I will make a stupid mistake. William is too smart to dismiss us as simple animals however and he kicks his legs at us, shooing us closer to the door.
Duke hisses at him, Eva, if we’re going to morph back, it should be now before the guards notice!
I caw, flapping my wings as William kicks me in the feet and I have to retreat a few steps. Duke hisses again and jumps in front of me protectively. He looks back at me and meows sweetly, as noticing something’s wrong.
“I thought cats ate birds?” William muttered before raising his shoe again.
“Stop! Don’t hurt the animals!” Calista cries, running over to us and gently pushing William back.
She turns around to us and kneels down to look at us more closely. Her eyes meet ours and her mouth drops, she realizes who we are.
Duke doesn’t waste any time, he bursts out of his cat form, Calista stumbles back at the sudden tall man before her. She yelps as William shouts for the guards.
The guards from outside finally stop playing with Zaebos and run inside to try and hit Duke with a baton. Duke evades them, punching and kicking them. He’s winning against the guards until more enter the room and William grabs Calista, trying to get her out of the room.
“A little help?” Duke calls, punching a guy in the jaw.
I snap out of my penalization and squawk loudly, diving at a guy. I send a dark bolt through my beak and at his head. It hits him right in the temple, his head combusting. His headless body falls lifelessly to the floor. Calista screams again and struggles against William who is trying to calm her.
A guard wraps his arm around Duke’s neck in a hold and another one draws a knife, ready to stab him.
I dive again but my body twists and snaps, my skin stretching and feathers leaving my body in a moment of seconds until I’m a human again. I tackle the guy with the knife to the floor, ripping the knife from him and stabbing it into his neck. Blood spurts out as I rip the knife free and stab it into the guy about to run at me from behind. I dig it into his stomach and twist. He spits out blood, it drips down his shirt and I tear the knife out of his skin before slashing his face.
A guard is advancing towards Duke who is blocking the door and fighting off another guy. I throw the knife at the guy’s head. The force of the throw makes the blade travel almost completely through his head. The tip sticks out between his eyebrows and he falls down. Duke shoots a light beam through the last guard and he too falls to the floor.
Dead and unconscious bodies scatter the room. William is standing in front of Calista, his face white. Calista yelps slightly in shock and stumbles backwards against a wall.
