Chapter Nineteen
The First Day
-Eva’s Point of View-
I wake for the eighth time since taking my toilet break. Luckily, this will be the last time. I’m sick of trying to get to sleep on this uncomfortable bench with these infuriating bright lights. I slept the longest as soon as I got back from the toilet break but I’ve been only dozing and then waking up since.
John walks in with his trolley along with some toast, fruit and more water. “I thought you’d like something warm.” He says as he puts some butter on the toast and feeds it to me.
“Why would you go to the trouble of toasting it for me?” I ask cautiously as he feeds me.
John sighs, something he tends to do quite a bit of. “I thought about what you said yesterday and it made me re-consider my whole life. Thank you for that, I could barely sleep because of it.”
“That makes two of us then.” I scoff.
John smiles. It’s only a small smile but it’s more than I’ve got from anywhere else here and I treasure the little things. I like John; he’s intelligent and listens to me. He seems me as a person, not as an entirely different race because of my power.
After I finish eating John once again makes me wait while he puts the trolley away and I can go to the toilet. It’s a communal room with other prisoners, or at least was until Jett, Blade, Corbin, Ebony, Seth, Duke and Cain freed most of them. It has only curtains for privacy and doesn’t smell too great but it could be worse. John gave me a change of clothes yesterday too which is only a black jumpsuit, I really do look like a prisoner.
When I finish in the toilet, instead of returning me back to my cell he takes me down another floor and into a small room. John looks anxiously around, as if checking if anyone is listening.
“Bad thoughts are it’s power.” John whispers quickly, his eyes still darting around the room.
Before I can ask what he means, the door opens and Henry steps out with two armed men with guns and another 3 people wheeling a large gun.
The gun is white, it’s the size of a cannon but the tip is tiny. The two armed guards step around towards me and grab my arms while I study the gun. I try to resist them but one of them hits me with the end of his gun. My vision blurs from the impact and my knees buckle, I had that one coming.
I flop to the floor as they tie my arms and legs up. My vision clears to see the large gun pointed straight at my face. I swallow nervously.
“We call this Harmony; a shot from this baby will send freezing ice through your fiery veins, so it’s similar to a normal powered gun but this time it only affects the dark powered. I thought it would be fitting for this to be the weapon to kill you.” Henry explains admiringly while walking around the gun, running his fingers across it. “However we thought we would give you a taste of it before we kill you with it, it has never be used before after all. Of course we’ll turn down the power so you don’t die; we have to save that for when the whole world is watching.”
I glare at him, trying to muster my courage. I knew they weren’t just going to let me wait in a cell, but I didn’t expect to be used as a lab rat. Such a stupid name for a weapon of destruction too, call it what you like in the end it’s meant for hurting people.
“I’m so greatly excited, gentlemen, let’s start.” Henry commands his tone too happy for my liking.
I stare at the whole of the gun; if this is meant to freeze me then I should heat myself up. I burn power through me, heating me up so hot that I breathe heavily from the heat. Henry nods to a man next to him who presses some buttons on the gun.
