Chapter Twenty-One
The Third Day
-Duke’s Point of View-
In a few hours, at 4pm it will be Eva’s execution. I hardly slept last night, it wasn’t until it hit 2am and I cast a spell to knock myself out that I slept. I’ve been training since I finished breakfast. Conjuring fire balls, I throw them continuously at the targets popping up in the arena. I duck and dodge as they too throw magic balls at me.
I’m so concentrated on hitting every target quickly; I almost hit Oliver as he suddenly runs in. He looks frightened at the fire ball burning next to him before it burns out.
“Oliver, I’m so sorry!” I call, running over, “What are you doing in here? I thought you were with Lavender and William in the gardens like you normally are.”
Oliver shakes his head, “It’s boring, I’ve been playing with Hugo instead but we want to help in some way; I want to help save Eva!” His hazel eyes stare up at me with bravery and determination. I look behind him to see Hugo walk in.
I look away from them, “I’m sorry but you two can’t do much right now, if we had more time then we could train you but it’s just too soon.”
Oliver pouts, “I don’t mean with magic, I don’t have powers yet.”
This takes me by surprise, normally everyone get’s powers when they’re only a few years old. For him to be over 10 and not have powers is so abnormal. Hugo stands next to him and nods as if to say, He needs help. “How can you not have powers?” I blurt out.
Oliver shrugs, “Mum and Dad forbade me to try in case I turned out like Eva and then when I finally did try when I was in the cell nothing came out.” There’s a hint of sadness in his voice, “I wish I did have powers like Eva and Hugo and you and everyone else here.” He adds, muttering under his breath.
I feel the need to at least try to get him to do some magic, for a child that old not to have power just seems way to unfair. I kind of need a break anyway. I shoot a light a light beam across the arena, it hits some buttons and changes the training style in the arena to beginner. One simple dummy appears in the middle, next to us.
“Whoa, you can do light powered stuff too?” Oliver cries, becoming excited.
“Yeah, dummy, I thought I told you that!” Hugo says, folding his arms and frowning at Oliver. Oliver pouts at him and Hugo sticks his tongue out.
I smile and point to the dummy, “I want you to try and use magic on this dummy.”
Oliver looks around alarmingly, but when he sees Hugo watching him critically he pulls himself together and closes his eyes. I see a rivalry starting with these two. I wait for a few minutes, Hugo taps his foot impatiently and Oliver sticks both his palms out in front of him at the dummy, nothing happens.
“You suck, is that all you’ve got?” Hugo scoffs.
I cover his mouth my hand, Oliver wipes his eyes, he looks completely dejected. “I’m so weak.” He mumbles.
I reply his beam in my mind, “You’re too rigid,” I begin and Oliver faces me, listening intently, “You need to relax yourself more. You can’t push it out; you have to just let it out. It’s completely natural, just forget about everything and let the magic flow through you.”
