Chapter Twenty-Two

The Judgment

Henry smiles at me, “It’s a lovely day for an execution, don’t you think?”

I smile in return, “It is.” The smile wipes off his face; he hadn’t expected me to react this way.

“Don’t you understand? You’ve lost! You’re going to die today!” He yells, his face going red from anger. I wonder when he lost his sanity. He thinks I don’t understand when he thinks everything he does is justified because he is light; he is stuck on believing his is the hero of the world when the victims he saves are only Lumin.

“I understand perfectly and I’m prepared.” I reply, maybe I’ve lost my sanity, accepting my death in this way.

A vein bulges in his head angrily. This is a good sight to see before I die. My eyes catch two people outside the cell and I see my parents standing there. They are once again nothing more than statues, I smile sadly at them. I don’t want my last memory of them to be bad; they did their best as my parents, even if they did suck.

“Are they going to say goodbye to me?” I ask Henry, gesturing to them with my head.

Henry smiles, the manic look lingering in his eyes “I brought them here to have front row seats of your execution, they’ve had to live with the burden knowing they birthed a merciless killer and now they’ll be freed of that.”

I look at my parents, would they just come in here and say something?  They don’t meet my eyes and they hesitantly turn away. Henry laughs and I look back at him, “It’s about time we head over to our stage, don’t you think?”

Guards enter the cell and they grab me, releasing me from the bench and shoving me out the cell. I want to be brave but with every step my nervousness increases. I keep telling myself it’s all worth my friends and my master, but I’m terrified. My palms sweat and I keep my gaze on the floor. We walk for a few minutes until we reach an elevator. Henry goes in the elevator first and he smiles triumphantly at me as the door to the elevator closes. We wait a few minutes until the elevator returns and the guards push me into it.

The elevator is bright like every other stupid room in this place but my heart and mind are full of darkness. The elevator doors open and I’m pushed out into a hallway. At the end of the hallway is a large double-door and I stumble up towards it with the guards on my heels.

We reach the doors, I can hear Henry’s voice from outside on the microphone, “He is evil! He has wreaked havoc for too long! He has killed innocents, our friends, our families but it ends now! It ends with his loyal servant who you’ve been seeing on your TV’s, she has been behind most of Valentine Ikol’s killings and now the citizens will have justice! See how a brutal killer can be caught and broken and will bow before you all! She will bow before us like all the dark powered will!”

The crowd cheers loudly and excitedly with every word he says. Are they even listening to him? Do they not hear the unjust and unequal words his is speaking? I lift up my head and face the door, I won’t let anyone else die, no one else will die for me, the hot headed and cold-hearted girl who took her friends for granted. I wish I realized how terrible I was earlier, I should have treasured my moments with everyone more.

Henry’s speech continues, “People will die today and for once it’s not going to be your beloved good family and friends, it’s going to be someone who actually deserves it. Will you stand by me and receive this justice?” The crowd cheers insanely, “I’m not perfect but if you’ll let me, I will be the best leader I can be. I will work for peace that all light powered deserve. The dark powered souls will no longer harm you!” The crowd somehow manages to get louder, he acts modest but he’s sucking up every moment of this.

“Thank you, my people. Now; behold the not-so mighty villain: Valentine Ikol’s servant who will no longer haunt your children’s dreams!” The doors are pushed open and I get shoved through, into the open sunlight that I haven’t seen for days.

The push me too hard, I can’t walk up the stairs fast enough with the shackles on the legs and I fall to my knees in front of the whole crowd. They cheer, shouting insults at me, laughing and pointing their fingers. I try to block them out but they’re so loud. The sun streams down upon me, I’d never thought I would miss the sun. I took it for granted, I took the breeze and the smells of flowers all for granted.

One of the guards yanks at my hair, pulling me up, I grimace and try to not make a sound. I close my eyes as the crowd yells at me. The guards push me closer to the middle and I stand facing the crowd.

I open my eyes bravely, it’s enormous; thousands upon thousands of eyes stare at me. Cameras are in my face, there isn’t one person in the Atmos world right now who isn’t watching this. All of these people littering the streets, climbing buildings and cars to get a look. They all hate me, every last one of them.

-Duke’s Point of view-

The crowd is out of control, the way they shout about ‘dark powered evil people’ and the way believe every single disgusting thing Henry says, they’re all crazy. It makes me angry to the bone.

“I’m not perfect,” Henry is saying, as if he’s expecting everyone to tell him he is and I even hear some people shout out he is.

“You’re perfectly wrong, you stupid bitch.” Jett snarls from next to me.

We’re lying on top of one of the buildings, looking down at the scene and the crowd. Some other members of the crowd are on the other building tops but luckily Lavender cast a spell on us to make us invisible and the people on the buildings are either not on our building or far enough away from us. It took a lot of convincing from William and Oliver but eventually Lavender agreed to help us, not only are we invisible but the ward repels people without them knowing. I can tell every moment spent with us she trusts us more. Blade, Jett, Darcy, Amara and Valentine are all near me. On the other side is Corbin, Cain, Walter, Michael, Ebony and Seth. Scattered among the crowd is undercover Tene, including Bernard, Hugo and Oliver and the maids. Everyone is here, because this will be the end.

“Thank you, my people. Now; behold the not-so mighty villain: Valentine Ikol’s servant who will no longer haunt your children’s dreams!” Henry shouts and the crowd cheers.

The doors are swung open and Eva is shoved through. She falls to her knees; everyone in the crowd is spitting insults and throwing waste at her. Some guards rips at her hair and pulls her to her feet. My body trembles with rage and the need to help her.

I can’t see as well up here but I can see there is a change in the way she walks. She’s confident and strong but in a different way, it’s like… she’s accepted death. She lifts her head to the crowd, I can see her sadness. Just what the hell has she been through?

“I’m going to rip them to shreds!” Jett hisses, speaking my exact thoughts, everyone agrees, our eyes stuck on Eva.

I grip the buildings edge tightly and Blade grabs my arm, seeing the look in my eyes, “Don’t do something stupid, remember the plan!” He warns.

But I have to help her; I can’t bear to see her like this!
