Chapter Seventeen

The Choice

Once again I am perched on top of a building, watching over Henry’s large skyscraper. It’s a very modern looking building covered in glass and tinted windows. It’s so tall that the last few floors are often surrounded by clouds. These are all the levels above ground however, there is also quite a few levels below.

According to William, our parents are up in the higher floors, as for my siblings, Adrian said they should be in the underground.

“I can’t believe you can do that.” William says for the thousandth time since I flew him over with my wings before turning into a crow. If only he saw the new Zaebos, I haven’t told anyone yet but I will when we return.

I can do much more than that. I grunt, not taking my eyes off the skyscraper.

“How long ago did you learn to do it?” William asks annoyingly. He must not be used to waiting and surveying in a mission.

Blade taught me a few years ago. I reply in a monotone, I need to concentrate on my mission right now.

William sighs, scanning the buildings around us for something interesting to look at, “You’re not much of a talker are you?”

Duke snorts in his cat form, agreeing with William. I spare a glare at both of them. A few more minutes pass by and the sun finally finishes setting, the sky turns dark. I flap my wings eagerly and lift up into the air.

I fly into the evening air and to the skyscraper where I land on a ledge. Seth and some of his friends release themselves from my feathers and disperse unnoticed into the cracks of the building. I take off again and fly to a statue of Henry next to the entrance. Seizing the opportunity, I poo on the statues face. A few meters away, Darcy lands on another statue of Henry and also seizes the opportunity.

We wait patiently until all of the lights suddenly switch off in the building. I fly up with Darcy and through an open window where Corbin slithers out the door in front of us. Darcy and I fly through the corridors silently as people scramble around trying to find the source of the power outage. They would never guess that it was several spiders, a Great Dane and a wolf.

I fly vertically up the stairs until I reach the last ten floors. The stairs stop and to continue on you must change elevators or change staircase. Darcy and I aren’t interested in that however.

The floor we’ve reached is lit only by the moonlight that barely provides enough light. My black feathers camouflage me well in this light. The furniture that decorates the floor is much more expensive looking than the previous floors and everything looks as if it’s been polished hundreds of times over.

According to William, Henry’s most important servants are on these levels. William would stay on this level but Henry and possibly my parents are expected to be further up into the skyscraper.

Ready? Darcy chirps quietly.

I answer by charging into one of the rooms around checking it for something or someone of importance. Empty. We’re going to have to go through every room.

-Duke’s Point of View-

I jump down the steps traveling further underground. William runs to try and keep up with me. Ebony and Amara aren’t far behind him. It won’t be long until we’re heard or spotted, it’s lucky we haven’t already. Adrian finally stops in front of me and he looks around anxiously.

Without any power on it’s almost impossible to see anything, lucky I have my cat senses but I can’t say much for the rest of them though. Adrian moves forward down the hall. The flooring is tile and the walls are too. It feels like a bathroom or something and it’s cold.
