Chapter Fourteen

The Burglary

The White building that stands before us is large and prestigious with blue tinted windows and gold-trimmed statues of powerful figures guarding the opening. There is a large amount of stairs that lead up to the entrance, elevating it from the rest of the buildings. A few statues have been removed and only a their marble bases are all everyone has to remember them by. They were statues of great Tene through history and, seeing as this is now a Lumin-only bank, there are only Lumin statues left.

I’ve been staring at this same scenery for at least an hour now, kneeling on a building top adjacent to the bank and I’m really starting to feel agitated. I look at Duke who is on the ground; he has a jacket on with the hood pulled over his head so no one will get a decent look at him unless they walk right up to him. He pretends to be on his phone when really he’s watching the bank from inside his sunglasses. Luckily I’m in a crow form so no one will feel suspicious of me either.

We didn’t know when he would get here or when he would leave so we’ve been here since the bank opened. Finally, the target leaves the building. He’s carrying the same leather briefcase that he entered with but now he has a flower in his front pocket of his suit and a stupid grin on his face.

The second target stumbles out of the bank after him, holding a newspaper which he fumbles in his hands trying to fold. He’s a shorter man with short brown hair and sun-kissed skin. He the one named Adrian, Duke’s friend and the one with the briefcase is William. I suppose I no longer want to kill William but I still want to do something very rotten to him for revenge, he needs to pay but for now that must wait.

Duke puts his phone away and stretches his arms out above him, that’s the signal. Duke walks casually over to William and Adrian who are waiting for their limo to pick them up. He stands in front of them, blocking the road.

He talks to them, at first it’s just polite conversation until Duke will bring up Roht and the briefcase. The briefcase had brought thousands of Tene citizen money to be deposited into Henry’s bank. William and Adrian begin to look distressed and I know the plan is progressing.

A short distance away, another limo pulls up but it’s not for William or Adrian. In the haste of wanting to get away from a man who knows too much, William shoves past Duke grabbing Adrian and getting into the limo.

I can’t believe it actually worked. Are they really that stupid? The limo drives off with our hostages to take them to the mansion. Duke was just going to shove them into limo because we didn’t actually expect it to work yet it did.

I fly down the building to meet Duke, landing on his shoulder. “Too easy.” Duke comments.

Yeah, I feel like there needs to be some action.  I agree and then I get a perfect idea.

I dive off his shoulder and speed through the glass doors of the bank as someone walks through them. Duke is momentarily surprised and he hurries after me when he recovers.

I turn back into my normal self, causing people to yell and jump back from the door with shock. Duke guards the door behind him, going along with me even though he doesn’t know what I’m doing.

I put my hands on my hips and smile at the people around me, adrenaline pumping through my veins. I am named a villain but this is the first time I’ve ever done anything so comical-villain. My grin broadens as I think of how I used to read some comics or watch superhero movies and how I would always root for the villain, it’s as if I’m reenacting one of their moments.

My grin widening, I pull out a gun. “Good morning!” I greet cheerily to the stunned faces around the room. I walk over to the counter and rest the gun on it. “I would like to make a withdrawal of $1,000,000.” I say to the clerk who stares at me with wide eyes.

“Y-You’re the Cupid of D-death!” She stutters, her hands shaking. She retreats one of her hands back and I pick up the gun, pointing it to her forehead.

The smile wipes off my face, “Oh, I wouldn’t push that button if I were you. Or you either.” I look to the guy on her left and the woman to her right as they take their hands away from the desk before they can call for help.

I glare maliciously at her with the gun still pointed rigidly to her forehead as her hands fumble while trying to type in the amount, “$1,000,000?” She asks meekly.

I nod, “Yes, $1,000,00 under William Morthimer my dear brother.” The woman looks up at me with surprise but her eyes catch the gun again and she quickly types into her computer. I need to hurry before security comes to their senses and arrives.

“While you’re at it, take $5,000,000 from Henry Roht’s account.” I add, leaning on one leg impatiently.

The woman to the right moves slightly and its all I need for me to lock the gun back in my fingers and shoot her in the arm. She screams in pain as the metal collides with her skin and then claws burst out of it, black poison oozing out and entering her bloodstream. It won’t be long until her white sleeve will turn red.

Startled and scared cries erupt from the people watching, “I said, don’t push that button.” I glare furiously at the wounded woman who falls back, clutching her forearm.

The first woman slaps two cheques on the table loudly, her eyes piercing bravely into mine. I reach out to take them but her hand slaps onto mine. “Well, aren’t you brave? But you’re forgetting…” I hiss, returning the gun to her forehead. “I’m the one with the gun.”

I send a tendril of flame up her arm, careful not to burn the cheques and it immediately ignites her shirt. She screams, dropping to the floor and rolling around in panic. I shoot a poison beam at the man who had his mouth open in shock, he chokes on the poison, joining his co-workers on the floor.

I feel someone running towards me and I turn to face a security guard who points a gun at me. I shoot him before he shoots me, hitting him in the thigh and he collapses onto the floor. I point the gun to the group of people behind him and they all shriek with fear.

“Let’s go Eva, you got the money and our Master will be waiting.” Duke says casually.

I jump at the crowd and they all cry out and cower again, huddling together for protection. I double check the cheques and I follow Duke out of the door who holds it for me. As soon as we leave I let my wings out, pick up Duke who had just morphed into a cat and fly off.

As soon as we turned our backs I have no doubt that they pressed the buttons and the police force will soon be arriving, we need to get as far away from here as quick as possible.

$1,000,000 from William and $5,000,000 from Henry? Duke questions as we fly.

“The Tene’s money and of course I had to steal something from Roht.” I reply a matter-of-factly. That was exhilarating; Henry has made his money with dishonesty so I don’t feel guilty at all. In fact, I almost feel proud.
