I sat at our dining room table with my hand under my chin. I had been home exactly twenty minutes since my appointment with Mrs.Kneels. My eyes stayed glued on the wall as if I was waiting for it to move. Only did I break my attention when my mom walked in, it made my eyes snap to hers.
"Honey, how did it go?" I furrowed my eyes at her.
"Amanda knows about Dean and me. She was at the office and she made a comment that let on she knew." I told mom and looked back to the wall. Her eyes were just as wide as when I saw Amanda earlier today. Good to see we were on the same page.
"Honey, I need to tell you something." She said as she took the seat next you me. My hands no longer rested under my face but instead was wrapped up in hers.
"Dean had an accident." She softly spoke and I turned my head to her. My look stayed the same furrowed look.
"What do you mean?" I asked he never once breaking my gaze as if I was afraid to miss whatever was about to come out of her mouth.
"He's been in the hospital the last week and a half. He was on his way to the office when his car was hit head on. He had drifted over in the oncoming traffic while he was on the phone." She explained in a slow tone. A week and a half.
"You knew the whole time I wanted him to come to my appointment?" I stood up, towering over her.
She stood up as she spoke, "Yes, but he needed to be with his family and you didn't need to worry about him with you being six months." My mother said rubbing my arm with her hand. I snatched my arm back and stared at her.
"That was not your choice." I said backing away and walking out the front door making sure to grab my moms keys off the wall. I saw my mom in rear view mirror as I drove off, she waved her arms frantically, screaming for me to stop.
I walked in 527 where Dean's last name was written on the door. I didn't even knock but instead I walked in and looked instantly around the room. My eyes landed on the father of my child as he laid in a hospital bed. I could see his chest rising and dropping as he breathed. I could tell he was tired and the sleep he was in was deep. I decided to take the chair beside his bed and I grabbed his hand. I watched his face as it turned and twitched.
"Hey."my voice cracked as his eyes fluttered open.
"Hey beautiful." His words came out smooth.
"How are you?" My hands ran over his face and through his hair.
"How's my baby?" He avoided my question and put a hand on my cheek. I covered his hand with mine not wanting it to leave.
"Just fine, healthy" I responded to him and his eyes roamed from my face to my belly and back to my face. My breath got heavy and everything inside of me wanted to lean up and kiss him and the look in his eyes showed the same feeling. He wasn't mine to kiss. But if on cue the door opened to revel Amanda.
"Well good you are up!" Amanda's voice exclaimed as she shut the door behind her. Turning around I saw she had clothes on her hand.
"Come on baby, you get to go home." She chimed as she laid the clothes beside the bed near Dean. She looked at me then at Dean who didn't make an effort to move.
"Honey, you might want to leave so Dean can get dressed." She sneered at me. I rolled my eyes and leaned back in my chair.
"No please, go ahead, it's nothing I haven't seen before." I smirked crossing my feet the best I could. Dean's eyes went as wide as they could go as he looked between Amanda and me but our glances never once broke.
"So did Dean sign the papers yet? I'm sure you are eager to get them done." She shot back and me and that's when my eyes went wide.
"what papers?" Dean's voice questioned what Amanda had just said and I looked towards him.
"Oh you haven't told him?" Amanda's voice acted shocked and surprised.
"Told me what?" Dean's confused voice spoke again but before I could talk to stop Amanda and explain she spoke up.
"Well it's the funniest thing, I was at the Social Worker office to learn more about what we talked about when I saw Kelsey there getting some information herself." Amanda said crossing her arms but keeping her voice innocent. Dean's face looked at me and I knew he had caught on.
"Adoption?" Was all he managed to get out causing me to nodded my head.
"I put two and two together when you and Kelsey couldn't keep away from each other so I asked your sister and she confirmed my suspicions." Amanda spoke once more and I looked at her. "You have no right to keep Dean from his child. You don't want the child but he does and I will be here to help him. We can be a family." She said to me as her hand grabbed Dean's hand.
"No. It's not his choice." I retorted back. Silence filled the room as Dean finally leaned up changing into the clothes Amanda had brought for him. I watched as he stood up and pulled his shirt over his head. He slipped his shoes on with ease and walked over to me. I was expecting some kind of pep talk or maybe him telling me it was my choice and he will support me. But for that to happen would have to be a fairy tale and I didn't get the words I wanted to hear. Instead I got the words that made Amanda's lips form into a smile. He walked out of the room leaving his words to haunt me.
"I'll see you at the firm Monday."
