Chapter 28 (Wow... This is a long series...)
"Wow, how many dances do we get this year?" Vriska asked sometime during lunch. It was nearing the end of February and things in life was beginning to calm down. Mid-Winter Break was coming up in only a few or so days and everyone was excited to have a week long break away from what many describe as hell.
"Well, one, apparently," I answered. "Considering the fact that it's a new year, this will be our first one."
"Oh, ha. Ha." She rolled her eyes and set her arm on the table, leaning her head on top of her hand as she continued to speak. "This is our third one this school year. And it's only been about a month or so since the last one ended!"
"The last one was a dance for children that we didn't even attend because we weren't old enough," Eridan said, shoving a couple of fries into his mouth. He chewed, swallowed, and continued. "And the one we actually went to was the Spooky Saturday Swing, which, by the way, we shall never speak of again."
"You're juth't embarra'th'ed that you ki'th'ed Nep and didn't even tell her about it afterward'th," Sollux cut in. Eridan gave an undignified squawk and was about to retaliate something but was, once again, cut off. For once it was by me.
"Anyways, this is apparently a Daddy-Daughter dance and, obviously, it's meant for us this time." Vriska viciously slurped at her milk before slamming it down onto her tray and glaring down at it. "Like, who in this school actually wants to dance with their dad?"
"I would if I knew where he was," I answered, taking a bite from from sandwich. "I mean, mom sorta knows where he is but she's never really told us too much about him. Not that I care too much."
"Isn't it strange that it seems that all of us only have one parent or guardian taking care of us?" Roxy asked. She was somewhat more sober than usual, seeing as she has managed more than once, recently, to tricking Dirk, who was a little busy with the robotics club's competition coming up. He would be here if it weren't for their recent project suddenly combusting while they had worked on some of the wiring earlier this morning.
"What do you mean?" I asked. I knew about Vriska's mom being single, along with Roxy and Sollux, but everyone else knew that family was a private matter at this school, no matter the closeness between friends.
"Well, everyone here was mostly raised by one person," she clarified. "I mean, Rose and I have her mother and Dirk and Dave share their Bro. Practically everyone's parent's significant other just suddenly, poof!" Roxy made a dramatic hand gesture, her fingers flying about as if they were magical dust particles instead of phalanges. "Disappears!"
"Thanks for that wonderful imagery, Roxy," Vriska scowled, rolling her eyes. "I'm sure they just didn't suddenly turn invisible out of no where. Well, maybe yours did, but mine sure didn't."
"Then what did happen?"
"Who the fuck cares?"
"Exactly!"
"That makes no sense, Rox."
"It does too!"
Leaving the two to bicker, I turned my attention to look at the poster that started the whole fight. It was just a silhouette of a small little girl dancing with a taller gentleman (hopefully her father or a father-figure) in front of a rather sparkly background that just begged your eyes to throw up. Whoever made it possible to go waaaaay too far with the glitter.
"I think I'll go," I muttered. If anyone heard me, they didn't notice. I just needed to figure out who I'm dragging along...
