Chapter 29 (we're almost to a 3rd POV special OMG)
The day of the dance wasn't as nerve wrecking as any of the other's I went to. Well, the one that was actually considered a dance and one that I was taken when I was supposed to talk to Eridan. Actually, I think both of those involved Eridan as the main point. Damn... No, Nepeta, think nice thoughts, this is supposed to be a nice evening.
"I can't believe you're going to a dance with a boy this time!" Mother squealed. She was actually home for this, Meulin squealing silently with her as she sat on my bed. Both of them were fully supportive of me taking initiative and asking a boy out to a dance. Girl power, or whatever. They didn't know that I actually just wanted to spend time with a friend and to do something to get out of the house. Sure, the tickets weren't exactly free (it was just five bucks a pop so it wasn't as if it left a gaping hole in my wallet or anything), but they were still furreaking excited.
"I mean, I love all your friends, even if you haven't been speaking much to Equius anymore," I glanced at Meulin who looked a little sheepish and I wondered how she even knew in the first place when I haven't exactly told very many people," but this time it's just you and one other person!" Mother squealed again and pulled me into a soft, but still agonizingly squished, hug, petting my curls.
Yeah, I got dolled up again.
When she let go she seemed to have an idea pop into her head, as she signed to my sister who eagerly nodded and they excused themselves from my room. I was a little grateful because now I can fully admire the skills of the Leijon family without any others in the room.
I was wearing an old dress from when Meulin was around my size, something we found in the attic and got dry cleaned. It was a dark blue with light blue accents all throughout the dress. A darker blue sheer went over everything, including my shoulders, and included a delicate amount of bows. All in all, it was a surprise to find that we had something like this in our house and that Meulin wore it once. But I guess we all change at some point, right?
My hair, which was usually straight at some point and stuck up awkwardly had been curled to look like fancy waves, which, for once, looked nice with my short hair. Speaking of which, it's been getting longer... Maybe I should cut it soon?
A knock on my door alerted me of my mother, who walked in soon after. She held a dainty necklace in her hands, which I recognized to be from her dresser. She said she wore it when she went on dates with our father, one of the few things I can clearly remember her talking about him.
"Figured since you're going to a dance with a real date, this time, I think you should wear this," she said. I was surprised. Meulin never got to wear it and if she did, she never told me. But then again, she's been dating Kurloz for as long as I can remember.
Mother had me lift my hair as she connected the back of the necklace together, fixing the tiny pendant to rest lightly on my clavicle. It was a simple silver cat leaping under a similar silver chain, chasing after a small diamond that were were told was the real deal. It wasn't the most spectacular but it was the most beautiful one that everyone in our family appreciated and took the utmost care of.
I remember, as a child, Meulin and I would constantly play in our mother's room, messing with her shoes, clothes, and jewelry. But out of all of them, we kept this one away from our grabby hands, knowing our mother treasured this one the most out of all her possessions.
"I don't think I can wear this..." I muttered. "What if I lose it."
"That things been tugged and played with more times than you can imagine," Mother laughed. "I doubt a simple night out could do any more damage. Besides, I trust you enough not to." Her hands rested lightly on my shoulders as she gazed lovingly at me through the mirror. "And your sister agreed that you should wear it for tonight. Even if your date is Kankri Vantas."
I gaped.
"How did you know?"
"Word travels fast when it comes to the Vantas family. Plus, his father is quite excited as well. Can't keep a secret worth a damn. He's been sending messages and pictures the whole night. I'm surprised you haven't been hearing my phone go off."
Meulin laughed and signed something, which made us giggle in return and my chest was feeling all fuzzy and warm, content and enjoying my family time. It had been a long time since we all had a family moment where we were all in the same room together.
It didn't take long for Kankri to arrive, ringing the doorbell exactly at six-thirty. Mother had answered the door before I could and gave him an invitation to come inside, but I clutched the black purse that Meulin shoved in my hands, I intervened before either could step back inside.
"It's okay mom! We should probably head to the dance anyways," I said, giving her a sweet smile. She just rolled her eyes and sent the two of us off, waving at Mr. Vantas who happily returned it from his spot in the drivers seat. Kankri the Gentleman guided me to the car and opened the door, allowing me to scooch inside before sitting besides me and then we were off.
Mr. Vantas tried talking to us but the atmosphere he created was just too awkward for the two of us to answer that most of the car ride to the dance was silent. Which was completely fine with me since I didn't necessarily feel like talking to his dad anyways. It was a little weird how alike he and Karkat looked and I never realized until now. Or at least focused on it until now. It didn't matter though, in the end, since this dance didn't concern either of them.
Just my special dad friend.
A/N:
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey... Yeah, long time no see. I noticed that there was some comment action going on the last couple of days so I was like "Whaaat? People are still reading this?" So I decided to try and update.
This is another of my many two-parters in this series.... Ooops. I just realized that I was writing so much that I didn't want to bore you all with an extremely long chapter that I just split it. And I wanted to apologize for leaving you so long. I got a new job and I'm finally in college. I'm bored at college because the classes I'm taking aren't really what I'm used to (which is IB level, btw) and so I'm a little ahead right now, despite a group project needing to be worked on and none of my partners wanting to work on it right away. Ugh...
Anyways, I wanted some Leijon family bonding to happen since Nepeta's going up in her dopamine levels! That's right, folks, science is involved in happiness! Yas, biology and chemistry and physics and SCIENCE! Fuck yeah, that's fucking sweet bruh!
Sorry, I got a little a head of myself.
Anyways, I'll try and not postpone the next part too long that you forget what happened in this one. My next break is... maybe this weekend? I dunno, but I hope to get it done soon.
:)
