"Get out now!"
"Maya!" Tessa screams back. "Just tell me why!"
The kids were hiding behind the corner, hugging each other tightly. Most likely scared of their mother screaming at the other woman, we were both crying.
"It's all your fault! You ruined my life! Get out now!"
"What do you mean?!"
"You and your fu-" but I stop myself, I'm not going to swear in front of the kids. "You and your stupid cigarette lit my house on fire!"
It only took the firefighter five minutes of just watching me freak out, breaking and crumbling even more, to finally get up and do something.
"Miss. Hart," He says, "Please calm yourself down."
"You see that glass plate on the counter?" I scream. "Ya! Smash your head on it!"
His dark skin turns three shade too red, and you could hear small giggles in the background.
Now, back to being mad at my cousin.
But by the time I turn around to yell at her again, I see the door slam.
She ran.
The coward.
"Miss. Hart-"
I walk straight up to him, and pull him close to my face by the vest.
"Is he alive or d-dead?"
"How about you see for yourself."
I begin to cry even harder.
I'm gonna have to see him burnt up and dead.
That's gonna be the last thing I'll remember of him.
I nod my head, and crawl over to my bedroom, slowly getting changed.
Thump, thump, thump...
A small little hand touches my knee, and I look into the blue eyes of Grace.
"Hey baby," I whisper, pulling her close into my chest. "I'm scared. I'm really scared."
She can't talk, but somehow she calms me down.
I have to be here for these four kids, even if it's hard. Even if I don't have him to do it with me.
I set the baby down, and let her crawl back to the rest of the kids. I walk to the washroom, and wash my face. I pull my blonde strands back in a ponytail, and walk back to the firefighter.
As soon as I'm about to say something else, there's a knock on the door.
"Uh!"
I silently walk to the door, and open it.
"Hey Peaches."
I stare at her, trying not to cry again.
She brings me in for a hug, something I really have been needing. My best friend's hug.
"I'm so sorry, Maya."
That's when I break down, harder then anything yet.
I can feel Riley crying too, but she focuses on me.
"It's okay, shh... Maya, everything is going to be okay."
"No! How can it be?!" I sob.
She pulls me back, so that I'm staring into her brown eyes.
"You can get through this."
"How?" I whisper.
"Because," Riley says with a sad smile. "You're Maya Hart, and you're strong. You can do everything."
It takes me a full two minutes to make the crying just a sniffle, and I hug my best friend tightly.
"So..." I ask between sniffles. "How are... you."
She gives me a questioning look, and then looks down.
"Oh ya!"
I give her an uneasy look, looking at her six month along stomach. It was, well... big.
"We're good."
Now she's a we're.
"Why are you here?"
"Your Mom called," She replied. "Don't you have somewhere to go? Farkle and I are here to babysit."
"Oh. Thanks."
I give an uneasy smile to my family, without the Dad, and Riley's growing family.
I'm loosing people.
She's gaining people.
That's how it seems to have been for a while though.
I leave with the firefighter silently, and we drive to the hospital.
"Do dead people stay in hospitals?"
"Sometimes."
We continue the drive in silence, and he parks in the driveway.
"Come on."
But I sit here, completely petrified.
"I-I can't."
He comes around to my side of the truck, and holds out his hand.
"You can do this."
I don't know him, and I don't know what he's walking me to.
But I feel like I won't make it to him if I don't take his hand.
So I take his hand, and let him lead me to my dead, or hopefully alive, Lucas.
The hallways seem like a thousand years has passed, it takes so long.
And then we stop in front of a room.
"He's in there."
"Th-Thankyou...."
Once he leaves, I stand in front of the door.
God, please have him in there. Please have him breathing, please have him there.
Please!
I open the door slowly, and stare at the man laying in the hospital bed.
Numerous tubs run into his body, and he wears an oxygen mask.
And there is a chest.
And that chest is moving up and down.
Up and down.
Up and down.
"Oh my god," I whisper, running up to his bed. "You're alive!"
I stare at his face through tearing eyes, and smile.
There are no scars on his face, but I can see the fake skin. They'd done plastic surgery on his face, and so far, it looks the exact same as it had before the fire.
The hospital gown he wears blocks any other skin that will have been scarred.
I take his hand, and sit down next to him in a chair.
"Hey," I whisper. "Please wake up, please be healthy."
He must be in a coma or something, because he doesn't respond to anything I say or do.
I must have sat there for an hour, just looking at his face is gratefulness.
He should be dead. He should have burned alive.
But somehow, he's alive.
And all I need is for him to be awake.
I finally kiss his head, squeeze his hand, and get up to leave. There might not be any hope for today.
But maybe, just maybe, I might see those green eyes tomorrow.
I walk slowly to the door, and as I'm about to open it, I hear a cracking noice.
"Hey Blonde Beauty."
