"Can we go?" I ask Cassian impatiently.
"Jyn, relax. We haven't caught any fish yet." he replies.
We've probably been fishing for at least two hours, and we haven't had a single bite. The sun is high in the sky, marking the midday of our fourth or fifth day trapped on Scarif. I want to leave this place. Sure, it's a nice planet, but I don't like being contained. I long to be free, to go anywhere I wish. That's why I want to find a ship. But at the same time, I know Cassian wants to go back to the Rebellion as soon as we find one, and I won't get to spend time with him. I don't really want to go back to the Rebellion for that reason. Plus, the constant worry of losing him during missions would be way too much for me to bear. I'll have to ask Cassian what he thinks about it later.
We sit on the beach, the waves softly flooding the shore and then receding. The fishing rods that we're using are very crudely made. We tied reeds on sticks for the pole and line. Sharp shells are on the end for hooks. The only thing we could find for bait was coconut, and it isn't working. Based on how long we've been trying to catch them, fish don't really like coconut. I'm a slightly impatient person, so I keep nagging Cassian, trying to convince him to just give up and eat coconut instead. But Cassian could sit here forever. He is much too determined to just give up, and I kind of appreciate that about him sometimes. I actually appreciate a lot of things about Cassian. His quiet optimism and his belief that things could be worse in any situation, not matter the circumstances make him such a great person. I also love his adorable smile when he looks at me. His warm brown eyes melt my heart and make me feel like a soft, happy lump of mush. I've been slightly obsessed with eyes ever since I was little. From a young age, I learned that a person's eyes show what their heart is feeling. My parents had eyes filled with love and joy, but so many of the prisoners in that camp with me had eyes of hate and fear. Until I saw Cassian's eyes, I never realized how much I missed seeing eyes filled with life and compassion. I could spend forever staring into his eyes, losing myself within them. Snapping out of my thoughts, I turn to Cassian.
"Come on, Cassian. Can we please go?" I plead, scooting closer to him.
He looks over at me, laughing. "You have no patience at all."
"No. I really don't." I reply smartly. "But we've been doing this for hours."
"Well, we can't stop now! I'm sure we can catch a fish very soon."
"But I'm hungry now. We probably need to be on the move today, the Empire is surely coming." I counter, knowing that this may change his mind. To my dismay, he shakes his head.
"I don't think they should be an issue just yet. Come on, Jyn. Just enjoy it, okay?"
"I'll enjoy it a lot more if I get a hug." I mutter under my breath, as quietly as I possibly can. I intend for him not to hear me, but he has good ears. Cassian laughs, dropping the fishing rod on the sand and leaning over to me. I gladly throw my arms around him, the top of my head fitting perfectly under his chin. Our heights really are perfect for each other. Cassian's strong arms easily wrap around me, our hearts beating as one.
"You know, when I first met you, I never would've guessed you liked cuddling so much." he remarks. "Or head massages. Or touching in general."
I look up to him, slightly loosening my grip to stare directly into his eyes. "Is that a problem?"
"No." he replies, grinning. "I like it as well."
I snuggle into him again, sighing happily. Hugs cure everything. There's only really one downside to hugs, and that one tiny detail is that they can't last forever. But with Cassian and I, they last pretty long. Like maybe twenty minutes minimum. I guess we just really like cuddling. Which is super adorable, I'll bet. I know my parents up there probably like who I've chosen to spend time with. I'm sure a lot of people would like the idea of us being together.
