The word 'Devdasi' is self explanatory. This system began during the later Vedic Period around 1100 -500 B.C.E .
The word 'Dev' means 'God 'and 'Dasi' means 'servant'. So, the word literally means
'Servant of God '.
The practice of Devdasi began with dedicating young girls to the service of God.
Later, this very system turned into a nightmare for women.
Before I explain you what a Devdasi is, I'll get into sociology to explain you the cast system, based on the occupation of the people.
Brahmin's : The top most class of the hierarchy. They were the priestly class who had the knowledge of the holy scriptures, like the Vedas, Purans etc.
Kshatriya's : The second class of people consisted of warriors, who fought for the nation.
Soldiers, kings etc belonged to this category.
Vyashias : Known as traders, they were merchants and economists. They were traders who sold goods across the seven seas.
Shudras : The final and the lowest category of people were the Shudras. These people were exploited by the three upper classes. The work of Shudras was to clean the streets, toilets, bury dead animals etc.
They were untouchables and even their shadow was considered as an ill omen.
Coming back to our main topic 'Devdasis'
The is pratha or system began in Andhra Pradesh and then continued spreading towards; Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Orissa and Maharashtra.
Initially the practice of ' Devdasi ' was even done by the upper casts where the girls had to serve God.
Later, the pundits or priests in the temple set their lustful gaze on the women and the upper castes stopped sending their daughters as 'Devdasis'
