Avantika sat with her head propped to the side of the damp wall's of the jail. Her feet and wrists ached as the chains cut through her flesh. Tears streamed down like rivers from her eyes that were swollen red. She had been trying to hatch an escape plan but could come up with none. Two guards kept a close eye on her and she could not do anything.

"Promise me you ....aah ....you will end this tradition.... PROMISE ME AVANTI .....!"

Her amma's voice rang in her head as she sat there in the dark cold cell awaiting her death. The clanging of metal was loud, perhaps the axes were being prepared or the swords were being sharpened to chop her head off.

"I'm sorry amma." She wept wiping her tears and sniffing hard. "I.....I couldn't....like sodāru said I made a really very wrong move...."

She was regretting her decision of killing Kumar Subbayya.

What if I gave myself to him?

Her thoughts began wandering.

"Always remember, that a woman must never lose her honour even if it means death."

She immediately wiped the tears away and said to herself, "No, I took the right decision. I killed the one who killed amma and now I will be with amma."

BANG ! BANG !

The loud noise on the railing of the jail door caught Avantika's attention. She looked up and saw a huge man opening the door. He entered the cell and grabbed her up with one hand. He dragged her out and bought her to a darker chamber. The chamber looked like hell! It was dark and cold, it smelled like rotten meat; smelled like death, and it made her tremble.

She looked around and found a huge wooden basket and then the place where she had to place her head for her decapitation.

"You won't be killed so easily." The man dragging her boomed.

"What?"

"We won't kill you so soon." He chuckled, "First I and my friends need to enjoy on your credit...."

Her eyes widened like saucers.

"LEAVE ME ..." She screamed jumping around trying to free herself.

He continued dragging her until they reached another chamber. He threw her on the floor and she slapped her palms on the floor to control the fall. A soldier came ahead and kicked her.

"AAH...!" She groaned falling on her belly. She managed to be up on her feet and spat blood.

"YOU FOOL," Yelled the chief jailer, catching the soldier who kicked her by his shoulders, "WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DO WHAT KUMAR SUBBAYYA COULD NOT DO TO HER."

Why is everyone in Maheshmati like this?

Her eyes welled up. Her self-respect, her virginity was everything she had remaining with her after her amma left her alone on this terrible earth. If her self-respect was taken away then that was worse than death.

The main jailer approached her and yanked her by her hair close to his foul mouth. She held her breath and glared at him.

"The best day of my life...." He exhaled on her face as she continued holding her breath.
