The court had assembled. It was past midnight and Rajguru Venkata, Dandnayaka Pratapa, Bhoomipati Bhadrarava, Yakshayagamini, Kumar Rudhra, Kumar Amarendra, Mahamantri Shivdev and the other elders of the court had gathered. Rani Maalavi Devi was not conscious yet, and was asked to rest by the vaidyudu  (doctor).

Raja Ekchandra Mudiraj arrived and the murmur in the court soon died down.

"Maharaj," Began Rajguru Venkata, "this is a cold blooded murder and according to the law in Aitareya Brahmana she must be executed."

"Rajguru Venkata, before any judgement let us know why did she kill mama so ruthlessly." Insisted Kumar Rudhra.

"The reason is clear!" Exclaimed Rajguru Venkata. "She did not want any physical relations with Kumar Subbayya."

"Rajguru Venkata, it is best not to presume but rather ask the accused the reason for her actions." Said Kumar Amarendra.

Turning to Maithali, who stood handcuffed, he asked in an authoritative voice, "Why did you murder mama?"

"Because he murdered my amma."

"My name is Avantika."

She broke the silence of the court with her steady voice. By now anyone would have been trembling but her feet were steady. Her eyes scanned the whole court and then stopped at Rajguru Venkata, who looked pleased that her identity was revealed.

"What is the matter?" She asked with a broad smile across her lips. "Does the name Chandramukhi sound familiar? Or should I remind what you all did?"

"THAT'S ENOUGH!" Snapped the Dandnayaka sharply. "You are the daughter of a woman who went against our tradition. She is a traitor and a thief, but her daughter has also achieved the status of a murderer."

"He deserves death." She replied without a jitter, "ALL OF YOU PRESENT HERE DESERVE DEATH. YOU ARE NOT WORTH BEING ON THIS EARTH."

"AVANTIKA." Roared Kumar Amarendra, "YOU ARE IN THE COURT FACING TRIAL AND YOU-"
