Chapter 27: You're My Brother

~•~

The blow was expected.

Not like he expected a hug or something.

Huey's head was knocked back at the force of the punch, he swore he saw stars at that moment. Riley definitely hadn't hesitated with that hit. Huey blinked wearily, touching his nose with both hands as the tingling sensation spread through it. The stars disappeared.

Riley was glaring at him.

"Okay..." Huey shook his head a bit and sniffed before he let go of his nose again. "I deserved that."

Riley scoffed. "You deserve worse than just that." His eyes were narrowed, his jaw was clenched, and his hands were formed fists by his sides. Riley was mad no doubt.

A similar scene of what would happen when he saw his brother had played in Huey's head for years, but for some reason, he was speechless at that moment. He didn't want to say sorry; he figured that be too...cliché.

"You disappear when I'm fourteen..." Riley starts, quietly. "With not even a note. And pop up like this?"

"My explanation is...reasonable."

Riley just scowled.

"Huey, man? That really you?"

Huey's eyes darted over to Caesar who was still staring at him with wide eyes. Huey expected other punch, stepping back a bit. But what happened was the unexpected. Before he knew it, Caesar was hugging him. Huey blinked a few times, uncomfortably stiff in his hold. Then with one hand, he pat his old friend's back. Caesar pulled away with a small, reluctant smile. He wanted to mad, but he just couldn't. It was impossible for him to be. His friend was back.

Cindy stared at Huey with the same expression she had when he stepped out of the car. She didn't know whether to hug him...slap him...scold him...welcome him. Then making her decision, she held up her fist. Huey looked at the fist and back at her before bumping it with his own. She forced a crooked smile. "McHater..."

Huey only nodded.

They were all quiet. Huey was still looking purposely at Cindy, but he felt Riley glaring holes at him.

"Can we uh...go inside?" Jasmine hooked her arm around Huey's for support. "We've got a lot to say."

Huey was sat on the couch with Jasmine next to him. She was playing with her fingers, distracting her mind from the current event.

The three had disappeared upstairs. They both flinched at the yelling Riley and Cindy produced. It sounded like Riley was the one being resistant. Huey couldn't blame him.

After a few minutes, Cindy and Caesar went down the stairs. Caesar looked tired, and Cindy just looked irritated. She looked at Huey. "You go talk to him."

"Are you insane?" Caesar interrupted, whispering fiercely. "Ya'll got a gun!"

"Caesar, stop it." Jasmine frowned. She didn't want Huey to be discouraged. She turned to him, placing a hand on his arm. "You should go...we'll be down here the whole time."

Huey didn't look at her, staring up the stairs at the time. He rolled his left shoulder back before walking up without a word. At the top of the staircase, he looked around. The place was huge no doubt. He could be anywhere. Huey decided to walk left and let his eyes browse the doors. He stopped at the first one and opened it slowly. "Aye, Riley?"
