Chapter 22: My Instincts Don't Lie / It's Dejà Vu

"Got something."

Richard Wolf and Ramsey Temple were sat in the car, they hadn't left the neighbourhood yet. The main reason was to quickly look through the database there and then, and the second reason was to confirm that nobody was following them.

Wolf leaned back into his seat, closing his eyes for a moment. And to think that before the doll's kidnap I was just another lazy detective. He wasn't mad though. Taking Jasmine's case was his choice. It just stood out from the others.

Ramsey read from his phone. "Full name, Huey Freeman. His parents died in a car accident at the age of six and he's lived with his grandfather ever since with his little brother...but...he disappeared at the age of sixteen." He frowned.

"Disappeared?" Wolf echoed.

Ramsey nodded. "Disappeared without a trace. They weren't even any signs."

Wolf was quiet for a moment. "And what of the little brother?"

Ramsey looked through the profile for a few seconds then his eyes widened. He shook his head in amusement. "You won't fucking believe it."

"What?"

"It's Riley Freeman."

"...the Riley Freeman? Basketball player?"

"And artist..."

"Well. That was unexpected. Maybe Huey and Riley communicate?"

Ramsey frowned, doubtful.

"It's a possibility," Wolf defended.

The men were quiet afterwards, just thinking. Then Wolf spoke up again. "Let's ask a fellow colleague to ask him some questions. We don't have time to take a plane back to L.A."

"And what will we do?"

"...for now let's just lay low. We don't know if we've attracted any unwanted attention from the bar yet. Wait and see what comes up...Freeman has to know something."

"And if he doesn't?"

"Just shut up, Ramsey."

"Hi...again."

Jack looked up from the floor. He was still leaning on his spot where he was sure Selena wouldn't see him on her way out. Guess my instincts aren't as good as I thought, he thought dryly.

Selena was carrying shopping bags in one hand, she shyly pulled a few dark  strands of loose hair behind her ear with her free hand. "Heh, I'm not usually this bold, but, uh..."

Jack sent her an amused crooked smile. Selena was already gorgeous, but her stuttering just made the Kardashian-look-alike look cuter.

She flushed a bit at his grin. "You're just gonna watch me suffer?"

Jack stood up straighter. "I admit it's quite amusing." He tilted his head a bit. "What it is?"

"I was going to ask for your number, but I realised you're a jerk so..." Selena whirled around to walk away, but Jack unconsciously snatched her wrist and pulled her back to him.
