Chapter 16: Back To The Bar
"So you think Jasmine was somehow linked to the gang confrontation that took place here two days ago?"
Wolf nodded as he shifted the car from drive to park. He got out and Ramsey followed. "Makes sense, doesn't it? Jasmine's seen not long ago, heading to San Francisco, and then there's a gang war? Something is strange."
Ramsey sighed as he examined the front of the club. "I don't get paid enough for this."
"Nope, no cop ever does. C'mon."
Inside the atmosphere wasn't as relaxed as usual. Infact, most of the people inside we're men who spoke among themselves in booths. The two detectives got strange looks, looking out of place in their work suits.
It was obvious they were the law.
Waving the bartender over was easy. He just nodded, asking for what they wanted to drink.
Instead of responding, Wolf slipped him ten dollars. "I need some inside info on the shooting--"
"I heard about it, and I was unfortunately off duty. Sorry. You can keep the cash. Fuck am I going to do with ten dollars?" Obviously offended, the bartender glared at him and moved on to another customer.
Ramsey narrowed his eyes at him. "I think he's lying."
"I think so too..." Wolf sighed. "I think ten dollars was to little. If he does know something? He's not saying anything anytime soon..."
"I'm sure no one is. We don't even seem welcomed here..." Ramsey elbowed him and gestured at the men who we're glaring at them.
Wolf ignored them and noticed a curtain in the VIP section where people walked in and out of. His eyes locked on a beautiful redhead, perhaps a minor, but she looked naíve. Perfect, he thought. "I've got an idea," Wolf whispered to Ramsey. "Just stay back."
As the girl began to walk past them and the bar, Richard Wolf approached her. "Hey there, doll," he said, sending her a beautiful smile. "Got time for a drink?"
The girl looked up at him with big, pretty green eyes. She shook her head. "Thanks, but--"
"Just a drink and I'll be out of your hair. Pretty please."
She hesitated and glanced at the men who we're watching them. Wolf saluted at them when she wasn't looking. She turned back to him. "Okay..."
"Wonderful." They walked back to the bar, Wolf made sure to lead her away from Ramsey and they sat at the end. He ordered two glasses of champagne. "I hope you don't get drunk easily?"
"Oh no, I dint drive yet. Its all right," she said back before taking a small sip.
Wolf engaged in conversation, "I'm Richard Wolf
"Kandy Valentine."
"Pretty name. Really suits you."
"Thank you..." he noticed how she didn't make eye contact and concentrated on her drink.
"So, Kandy. I heard...recently about this shooting--"
"So that's why you called me over here, hm, detective?" She looked up at him again.
He sighed and made a tired smile. "Am I that obvious?"
She giggled. "Yes, you are. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I don't know anything. I wasn't here. Goodbye." She finished her drink quickly and stood up.
