Chapter 25: The Breakthrough

~•~

Two men each carried the three bodies out in bags. They had already started decomposing before the San Francisco police arrived, but not to the point where they couldn't identify their bodies without checking DNA.

A black car with a police headlight drove into the area and onto the Giovanni private property. The car parked around the side of the driveway and the L.A detectives stepped out. Wolf examined the front of the house. He could see the door was busted open from the outside and already had bullet shots in it. Without a word, Wolf walked up the rest of the driveway and his partner followed. A nearby cop who looked to be examining the break in when he noticed the two walk up to the door and frowned.

"Detectives Wolf and Temple," Wolf said nonchalantly as he held up his badge with Ramsey's. "We have a warrant."

Without letting him respond, he side stepped him and went into the house. "Hey, I've always wanted to ask," Ramsey spoke up, "How come you always start with your name?"

Wolf gave him a weird look and rolled his eyes. "You can start with yours next time if you want to." Ramsey just grinned and followed him into the kitchen where they were already two cops. They had already traced the bodies with chalk.

"Can I get the case review?" Wolf asked them.

One hesitated before saying, "The bodies belonged to Rocco Giovanni and Louis Sullivan. They were both shot in the chest. The wife and daughter are missing."

The two frowned at the bullet holes in the counter and the wall behind them. They were taking cover...Wolf thought. But who was attacking?

"Wolf! Come check this out!"

Wolf's trail of thought was interrupted when he heard the shout of his name. He frowned when he realised that his partner was nowhere near him. "Ramsey?"

"Up here!"

Wolf walked out the kitchen and followed his partner's voice up the stairs and into a specific room. Ramsey was hunched over something, next to him was a mat that looked like it had obviously been kicked. "You won't believe this." He stepped aside, showing the hole in the floor that was hidden by his body. Wolf leaned over and looked into it with wide eyes. "You think Rocco's wife and kid hid in here? And maybe got caught?"

Wolf didn't answer, his eyes darted up and immediately locked on a brush lying on one of the nightstands next to the master bed, which was currently unmade. From out his pocket, he pulled out one white glove and slipped it on, slowly walking to that spot. Ramsey watched him pick up the brush with his gloved hand. The brush didn't have any strands of dark hair, the hair looked like a brownish- orange, more orange. It obviously didn't belong to anyone white, nor black.

"Or maybe..." He whispered, examining the hair. "Someone else hid in there."

"Oh she was here alright..." Ramsey mumbled. "And we missed her. Fuck."

"What do you think she was doing here in the first place?" Wolf mumbled as he tugged a few strands of hair from the brush.

"Well...the chief did they that they suspected Rocco of being infiliated with the mafia."

"Mafia or not, there's no reason he'd kidnapped a super model and risk getting himself exposed. And judging by the bed..." Wolf's eyes darted to the unmade bed. "She was sleeping with someone, otherwise at least one side would be neat. She was here willingly."
