Chapter 30: It Was Never You

"So much for hiding it from the media."
Jasmine whirled around and held her hand up. "Not now, Huey. Just shut the fuck up."
Huey's eyebrow shot up. Did she just cuss at me? He realised then that he had really made her mad.
"Jasmine! Jasmine!"
"Who was your kidnapper?!"
"How'd you get back?!"
"Who's the stranger?!"
"Is it true that your engagement with Jackson White is broken off?!"
"Jasmine!"
Tom and Sarah half jogged out, followed by their bodyguard. Sarah said to him. "Call the cops to get them the hell off our property." She looked at the current torn up couple. "You two better get inside."

Jasmine had ignored him the whole ride home. The police were able to shoo most of the crowd to the sides, but they still followed her. At least I can go home now, Jasmine thought. Can't hide now.
Back at the mansion, Huey loitered around Riley's art room. He started going there from time to time, when he wanted to think anyway. Riley's paintings somehow relaxed him -especially the one with them and Robert.
"Why you always in here?"
Huey looked over his shoulder and saw Riley entering the room. "Thinking."
Riley sat on his stool in front of his easel. "Of callin' Jas a mistake?"
Huey blinked. "I didn't--"
"Ay, I couldn't give ah fuck."
"How'd you know anyway? She told you?"
Riley chuckled and turned to a clean page. "Bitches always shoutin' when yappin' 'bout a nigga. I overheard har 'n Murph."
Huey sighed.
Riley said nothing and started painting. Huey felt the tension between them at times. Riley was calm, but only because he was an adult. Huey couldn't imagine returning while he was still in his teens: he'd hate him for sure then. Huey watched him paint for a while.
"I'll need help," he said suddenly, making Riley slow down. "Settling in...finding a decent job."
"Whatchu wanna do?"
"That's the thing. I don't know yet."
"McHater not knowing?" Riley chuckled dryly. "New to me. D'you ask Jasmine?"
"I haven't said anything to her about it. She'll want to help."
Riley frowned at him.
"Especially financially," Huey added. "I can't be moving into her house and using her money whilst sitting on my ass. What'll that make me look like?"
Riley shrugged a shoulder. "Good point. Military?"
Huey considered it. "No."
Riley faked a laugh. "How 'bout chu make yo own agency," he joked. "Get a loan. Hire."
"That's...actually actually good idea."
"Ha! Right."
"I could get a loan...I could use B.R.O and A.F.R.O from when I was ten."
