Log book – fourth entry
5pm. That was the most boring day of my life. I thought school was bad, but home tutoring… oh well. At least I can go out now. I don’t want to be out when it’s dark though. I can’t bare seeing The Slender Man again. I decide to set out anyway, bringing my torch, and this time my phone. I hope Dieter has a phone too. Instead of using my patio door, I go through the front. “Back home earlier this time, Lindsay!” my dad booms. “Last night you came back too late”.
“Bye!” I simply shout back, shutting the door. It’s lighter than yesterday, and much warmer. I can feel some sunlight faint on my skin. I breathe out. I do love where I live. I just don’t like the “wildlife” around here. I head for the stream, not daring to go back to where the incident happened. I freeze. Someone’s there, sitting by the stream. Then I realise it’s Dieter. “Dieter!” I yell, dashing towards him. I throw myself on the ground next to him to discover he’s fishing. “Guten Tag,” he says grinning.
“Come again?” I say, almost as puzzled as yesterday.
“It means hello. And good day, also.”
“Well, um, Guten Tag to you too,” I smile. Then I remember why I had to come to him. “Look, this is going to sound strange…but do you have a mobile?” I can already feel my cheeks going red.
“A mobile what?” he asks, hooking bait onto the fishhook.
“A mobile phone”, I say, going even redder.
“Oh, yes. How else could I talk to my friends?” He was not making it easier for me at all.
“Can I have your phone number then? Because, well, things keep happening. This is also why I came to see you”. He nods and we exchange numbers. It feels better to know I can contact him when something happens. “You don’t mind, do you?” I ask nervously. “Like, me calling or texting whenever I encounter him?” To my great delight, he shakes his head.
“No, I won’t mind. In fact, I am happy, because I have someone else to talk to”. I think I’ve actually made a friend here! So I begin to tell him about what I seen. “I actually seen him,” I insist, trembling at the thought. “He was right outside my house. Just standing there”.
“Really?” he asks, sounding really shocked, this time actually looking away from his rod. “I have only seen pictures.”
“Where did you get the pictures from?”
“Online. When the children went missing, I started to look it up. I don’t even know how I came across it.”
“I could look into it more. I have a laptop in my room back home,” I say, showing off just a tiny bit. “That’s a good idea!” he says, dropping the line into the water.
“Maybe you could help me?” I ask. “I mean, you know more about him than I do. Plus, you’ve searched it before”.
“Okay, sounds good,” he says, keeping his eye on the water. I wait a few minutes, watching the water flow peacefully through the forest. Then Dieter decides he won’t catch anything and stands up, pulling the line out the water. “I will drop this off home. Then I can come to your home. At what time?” I think for a minute. Dad gets home from work late, so…
“Come at eight,” I say, standing up too.
“Okay, I will,” he says, and we walk towards the house. When we arrive, I see him off.
“See you later!” I wave.
“Bis Später!” he waves back.
“What?” I call back at him. He walks off, chuckling to himself.
