(Trigger warning)
Delta was standing in the middle of the Poseidon cabin, staring at the dagger in her hand. She just wanted everything to end. She was exhausted, both mentally and physically. Ever since John's death she hasn't been able to get one good night of sleep, without what happened replaying in her dreams. She blamed herself for John's death. He wasn't supposed to die, she was. Her friends had tried to help her, talk to her, but she pushed them away. She didn't think they would understand. She looked at her arms and saw her fresh cuts. She had started cutting to help with the pain, but it wasn't working anymore and she only knew one solution. She brought the dagger up to her throat. She applied a little pressure and felt a drop of blood trickle down her neck. Then she was tackled to the floor.
She was pinned down on her back, and when she looked up to see who it was it was Percy. She was so focused on killing herself she didn't even hear him come in. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Percy yelled at her.
"WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?!" Delta yelled back mad that he had stopped her.
"WELL, I WON'T LET YOU DO IT!"
"YOU CAN'T STOP ME!"
"I JUST DID!"
Then in a second all her rage was gone, and her eyes clouded with tears. "I'm sorry," Delta whispered barely audible. Percy's eyes softened and his grip loosened. "I'm sorry," she repeated with her eyes closed.
He got off her and sat beside her, holding her as she cried. "It's okay. Everything will be okay."
Delta shook her head and pulled away from Percy. "No it won't. Can't you see, Percy. This is eating me alive."
He looked at her worried and confused. "What is?"
"Everything that's happened. John's death was my fault."
"No it wasn't."
"Yes it was."
"No it wasn't."
"Yes it was."
"No it wasn't." Delta was about to go and reply but Percy held his finger up stopping her. "I can go all day, women. No it wasn't. Did you force him to trade his life for yours?"
Delta shook her head. "No."
"Was it his choice?"
"Yes."
"Then how was it your fault?"
Delta shrugged. "I don't know."
"Exactly. It wasn't your fault. So don't beat yourself up about it."
Delta rubbed her eyes, wiping away the tears. She hugged her brother and said, "Thanks, Perc."
He hugged right back. "No problem."
"I guess I owe you one now."
Percy pulled back and looked at her, remembering what John had said before he died. She'll never say you owe her, so neither should you. He shook his head at her. "No you don't."
Delta looked at him confused. "What?"
"I didn't do it because I wanted something. I did it because you're my sister and I love you."
"Thank you."
"Anytime." With that they hugged again.
After a bit they pulled away and stood up. "Wait a second," Delta said. "What are you even doing here? I thought you said you were busy all day."
"Oh, right," Percy awkwardly scratched the back of his neck. "Yeah, I lied."
Delta looked at him confused. "Why would you lie?"
"Well, ya see, me and the others were setting up a surprise party for you at the dining pavilion. Ya know, to celebrate your thirteenth birthday." Delta looked down sad. She hadn't even realized it was her birthday. "But with what happened I understand if you don't want to. I can head back and tell them what happened and that you're not up to it, if you want."
Delta nodded. "Yeah, that'd be good."
"Alright, well then, I'll catch you later, okay?"
"Ok." Percy gave her one last hug before heading back to the dining pavilion.
When he arrived he was first spotted by Annabeth. "Where's Delta?" She asked confused as to why she wasn't with him. When she said that everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to Percy to listen.
He walked up to them. "She's not coming," he answered.
"Why not?" Piper asked.
Percy looked around meeting everyone's concerned faces. "She tried to kill herself."
"WHAT?!" Everyone exclaimed at once.
Percy saw Clarisse walk away out of the corner of his eye, but he chose not to question it, knowing that her and Delta were indeed friends.
"Why?" Jason asked.
"When?" Leo asked.
"How?" Frank asked.
"Where?" Nico asked.
"She tried to cut her neck with a dagger in our cabin when I went to get her," Percy explained. "She still blames herself for John's death."
"I knew she felt bad, but I didn't think she would try and do that," Hazel commented.
"Me either," Reyna added.
"I don't think any of us thought she would do that," Thalia informed. She turned her head to look at Annabeth, who had yet to say a word and had a blank expression. "Annie? You alright?"
"She promised," Annabeth whispered.
"What do you mean?" Percy asked as they all looked at her.
"Three weeks ago," Annabeth started. "I made her promise that she wouldn't try to kill herself, not on the river Styx or anything. Just a normal promise, and she did. She promised. But I guess she just couldn't keep it. I should've tried harder."
"I think we all could've tried harder," Percy pointed out.
"Yeah," Nico agreed. "We got so caught up in ourselves that we forgot that this is the first time she's going through this."
"Alone no less," Piper added.
"Yeah, and that's way worse," Hazel spoke.
"At least we all had someone," Frank pointed out.
"Right now she has no one," Leo observed.
"But she wouldn't be alone if she didn't push us away," Percy argued.
"She may have pushed us away," Jason started.
"But in the end," Thalia continued.
"We were the ones that let her," Reyna finished. They all nodded silently agreeing. They all fell into silence until abruptly shattered by a shrill scream, that could only be deciphered as the word, "help."
