One year later

"ZACH YOU TRAITOROUS BASTARD!" I yelled and launched myself at him.

His laugh resonated in the empty hallways as he ran aimlessly, dodging my attacks.

"I swear I didn't do it!" He defended himself, but his cheeky laugh gave him away.

I groaned in frustration and glared at him before jumping forward, getting hold of his hoodie sleeve and soon we were on the floor, me above him.

Like always, my heart thudded loudly against my chest because of our close proximity. Before he could see my flushed face, I got up and fake glared at him. I couldn't stay mad at him for long with his face that cute.

"Come on Elli. You can't stay mad at me for that." He pleaded a second later, giving me that puppy face. We were both aware that  he was anything but sorry right now but he knew I would fall for that puppy face of his. He always knew.

I cursed under my breath. "You don't throw a water balloon at someone on the first day of school, you idiot!" I yelled, pulling at my now wet tank top, that had started to stick to my skin. It was cute for the first day if school but Zach just had to ruin it.

Zach laughed at my misery but I couldn't help but feel my stomach fluttering dangerously. I tried to ignore it.

"I just wanted to see your reaction. You look cute when you're intimidating." He teased, wiggling his eyebrows.

This was just one of his many compliments for his best friend.

Best friend.

I sighed at the word. I would always remain as his best friend. Nothing more, nothing less.

And it didn't help that I was hopelessly in love with him. Yeah I know. I was crazy and hopeless and too ambitious. He never saw me that way anyways. For now, I was just contented to be by his side. Even though it meant being his best friend and following through with him in one of his many adventures and spontaneous rendezvous.

I cleared my throat ever so lightly because he was laughing and it was so enthralling that I had lost my voice for a moment.

"Whatever. Now what am I going to do with this wet tank top. The start of my senior year is a disaster!" I groaned, stomping my foot. He could be real cheeky at times and even though I loved him didn't mean I don't get annoyed at his pranks and teasings.

"That is why," Zach started as he brought his backpack infront of him,"..I came prepared. As usual." He praised himself as he pulled out a hoodie out of it. It was his favorite black hoodie. My heart thumped again.

"It's your favorite hoodie." I pointed out as he handed it to me.

He nodded. "Also the one you like the most that you almost stole it from me."
