"So what? These things are like the cannibals of the supernatural world?" Angelo asks as we sit around the table eating.
"Basically, yes. And the protection spell put on the Archangels doesn't involve them," Grace replies to him, picking up a napkin and wiping tomato sauce off of his face.
I fold my arms on the table, looking around at everyone else. James sits across from me, picking at his food, lost in thought. Next to him, Grace is slapping Angelo's hand away from her plate. To the left of James, Alexander moves his fork around the leftover gravy on his empty plate. I look to my left, at Lola, who pokes at the salad in front of her. She looks up at me but doesn't say anything. Next to her, Sebastian is eating a sandwich, not really paying much attention to everything else. To my right is Daxia, who is almost done eating her food, and also not really paying any attention. Next to her is Nicholas, who sits with his hands folded in front of him, with an empty plate. I look up and see Byron walking over to the table.
"Oh joy, just when I thought today would be a good day," Daxia mumbles.
I chuckle to myself as he sets his plate down at takes a seat at the edge of the table, next to Alexander.
"So what did you find?" Byron asks, looking from me to Grace.
"They're called Leviathans. They're some kind of cannibalistic sea creature that can shapeshift into humans. And to make matters worse, not only are they unable to be killed, but the protection spell placed on the Archangels has no effect on them," I say.
Byron runs a hand through his hair, causing the cigarette that he tucks behind his ear to fall. He catches it and then puts it back in place.
"What do you mean they can't be killed? That's impossible. Every creature has a weakness," Byron says.
I shrug.
"The book said only a pure demon creature could kill them. But there's no such thing," I say.
Byron's face suddenly changes, like he remembers something. I wait for him to say something, but he doesn't.
"Hey, has anyone else noticed that our powers don't work in here?" Sebastian says suddenly.
"What do you mean?" James asks.
"I mean, I can't get into anyone's head. Even those of you without a blocking shield," He says, looking at Daxia.
Daxia rolls her eyes, and then gets up and walks over to Sebastian. I watch as she aims her hand towards him, and Sebastian jumps out of his chair, moving away.
"Hey! What are you doing?" He asks.
Daxia shrugs.
"Testing your observation," She replies.
Sebastian slowly moves back into his seat and then looks at Daxia.
"Alright, test away," He says.
Daxia aims her palm towards him again, but nothing happens.
"Well that's disappointing," She says, returning to her seat.
"It didn't work?" I ask.
"Well if it had, he would be on the brink of death right now, so I'm going to say no. It didn't," He replies.
"Wait, you're an Archangel," Lola says slowly, leaning over to look at Daxia.
"Yeah, and this is a spoon, and that's a plate. Your point is?" Daxia asks.
"How do you still have your Leuidine powers?" Lola asks.
I turn towards her and grab her right wrist. The markings are gone.
