In an alternate universe Sabrina would have brushed off the situation she walked into the restroom but either her emotions finally imploded or the alcohol just took over, and she pleaded Zane to take her anywhere else.
Zane drove for miles, while Sabrina quietly whimpered ignoring Zane each time he asked what was going on. Finally they arrived at a destination, the cliff looking over the ocean they would come to each time they skipped classes or just needed to get away from the rest of the world. It was Zane, Sabrina and Heath's favorite spot.
Clueless to the situation, maybe this wasn't the ideal place for Zane to bring Sabrina but at the same time it was exactly where she needed to be. Surrounded by nothing else but the sound of crashing waves, and the wind gusts flaring her dress back.
She felt like she could scream to let out all the angst but decided against it.
"What happened, Sab?" Zane asked one last time. He sat on the rocks, legs spread forward not caring about his suited pants.
Sabrina took in a deep breath. "It was Heath," she almost whispered, but loud enough for him to hear her.
"Where? In the girls bathroom?" He questioned. "What could he be doing in the girl's roo- oh." The pieces clicked in his head. Zane had known Heath long enough to know what exactly it was Sabrina walked into.
"I've always known you're into him, you know," Zane said after a period of silence.
Sabrina who was standing still staring out toward the ocean, turned around facing down at Zane.
Skeptical she could be walking into a trap she didn't answer, looking at him then back to the ocean.
"You can't hide it forever. You should have told him. Maybe this could have been avoided." Zane suggested.
"Are you saying it's my fault?" Sabrina felt the tears welling in her eyes again but still refusing to face Zane.
"No, absolutely not. Of course I'm not saying that ,Sab. But who knows, maybe he feels the same."
Sabrina couldn't and wouldn't believe those words for a moment. She didn't say anything back and neither did Zane. After a few more minutes of standing, Sabrina finally took a seat next to Zane where he offered her his suit jacket. They sat for what felt hours surrounded only by the sound of the crashing water and whistles of the wind.
The week after prom, Sabrina avoided Heath as much as she could, that meant avoiding Zane at times too. Heath didn't bother approaching her either, maybe his ego was too big or he honestly just didn't know what he would say to his supposed-to-be-prom-date who is also his best friend that caught him fucking another girl in a bathroom stall.
Unfortunately, there was no way Sabrina could avoid him forever. Thalia, one of Sabrina's only other friends was having the end of the year senior party. The last major house party of the school year and everyone was invited. Sabrina knew that but still agreed to go when Thalia practically begged her to come.
"Please, Sabrina you have to be there! Who knows when we'll get to party all together again!" Thalia pleaded.
This was true. Sabrina had made the choice she had been dreading all year. She could either stay in Florida and study in Miami or move to New York to study at NYU.
It was a difficult decision but after the events that had taken place it was a no brainer. Sabrina let her parents know and they made the final call. In a month she would be headed to New York for the next four years of her life.
Friday night soon arrived. Sabrina took a deep breath as she turned off her car. Thalia's house parties were always the best. Even better when she would gather at Heath's house with Zane and drink a couple of beers Heath would steal from his brother. Crazy how all that had changed.
She stepped into the crowded house. All the seniors drinking from red solo cups and dancing to the sound of the thumping bass. The last epic house party where they'd all be reunited.
Sabrina made her way to the kitchen and immediately saw Zane standing behind a couple of boys who were hogging the keg.
"Baby, you came!" He shouted over the loud music practically running to Sabrina and picking her up into a hug.
"I've missed you Sab." he spoke into her ear.
"It's only been a week, Zane," she tried to play off the fact that she missed him too. And Heath.
He pulled her back toward the keg where he filled two cups for them. They talked about their week, Zane telling her how boring it had been without her. He tried not to mention Heath but it was impossible not too.
As if on cue, Sabrina heard a shouted, blaring laugh coming from the porch next to the kitchen. That unmistakable laugh only belonged to one person. Heath was walking toward the keg not noticing Zane and Sabrina at first but when he did his smiley face turned into stone.
He swallowed hard as he walked toward them.
"Yo," he said nonchalantly. "Sab, can we-" he tried to say before she interrupted him.
"Hey, it's nice to see you," Sabrina smiled and patted his shoulder as if nothing had happened over the past week.
"Nice. To. See you too?" Heath was confused. Why wasn't Sabrina lashing out at him?
He knew she wasn't the angry type but after what he had put her through it was only fair for her to react in such a way.
Zane just sipped his beer in confusion.
"So," Sabrina started again, trying to avoid awkward silences at all costs. "I've made a choice about where I'm going next year. I'm moving to New York!" She claimed excitedly.
"Baby, WHY?" Zane shouted.
Heath just spit out his beer.
It would hard to say goodbye to them. They had been the best friends she had ever had. And although Heath had crushed her heart, he meant so much to her.
