The big night was finally here. Sabrina had been anticipating it since the moment she moved to Florida. Her entire childhood consisted of moving from city to city due to her father's business but her family finally agreed to settle in Fort Lauderdale to allow Sabrina to have a stable and fun high school experience.
All the friends and bonds she had made through the years eventually dissolved through the years. Her mother realized it was necessary and important for Sabrina to form strong friendships.
And that's what happened when she befriended the two school clowns. Heath and Zane had trouble written all over them constantly making jokes, disrupting class, and occasionally being sent to the principal's office. When Sabrina's mother suggested making friends, these two were not exactly what she had in mind. She never failed to remind Sabrina either.
But Sabrina assured her they were the most generous, selfless and kind friends she had ever made in any other city they lived in. And it was the truth. Sabrina confided in these two like no one before.
Of course tonight, on what was supposed to be the most important night of their high school lives things weren't looking as uplifting as she thought they would.
For the past four years, Sabrina had to keep her feelings to herself afraid she'd ruin a friendship she felt she'd been missing all her life. But everything about Heath lit her up inside. She'd seen him have girlfriends through the years and the fact he had never made a move on her reassured her that her feelings for him would never be reciprocated.
Eventually she learned to accept her fate knowing that their friendship was worth more than any fantasy. But one random evening, they were hanging out in Zane's basement having their weekly movie night when he asked her the most unexpected question.
"Would you want to go to prom?" Heath asked looking straight at the tv.
Sabrina was confused and even wondered if he meant to ask Zane the question.
"Are you asking me?" She asked for reassurance.
"No baby, I was asking Zane. Of course I'm asking you, Sab!" He gave her a small shove with his shoulder and smiled.
"So, y'all gonna sit here and exclude me from y'all plans?" Zane made his way back from the kitchen with another bowl of popcorn.
"Zane, you said you wasn't even going bitch. That's why I ain't ask you first," Heath pretended to roll his eyes.
"Whatever, bitches. Can we get back to this movie now?" Zane replied pressing play on their millionth time watching The Simpsons Movie.
Sabrina didn't respond to Heath that night, still in shock that he had even asked. She mentally cursed herself for not replying to his question because "yes, a thousand times yes" but she still wasn't sure if he was serious or just being sarcastic.
But when he texted her later that night she didn't hesitate twice to reply.
Heath: So was that a yes or ...
Sabrina: Yes, I'll go with you
Heath: Goodnight, Sab :)
Sabrina: Night, Heath :)
She would have never guessed that two months later, on the night of prom the only person who would show up at her door, dressed in a suit, was Zane.
"Sorry, Sab. He's not coming," he said when Sabrina excitedly opened her front door expecting Heath. Her heart shattered.
She questioned him why not but Zane simply looked down shaking his head.
"I don't know, Sab. I'm sorry," he apologized again even though he didn't have to.
It was too good to be true, Sabrina was sure of it.
She didn't question the situation any more, grabbed her belongings, and left to the prom with Zane.
They arrived at the school, the streets filled with all the students dressed glamorously making their way into the building.
"We don't have to go in. We can go eat something. I could really go for a burger right now," Zane tried to lighten the mood a bit. The entire car ride had been silent and tense.
"No, let's go in. We only get to go to prom once in our lives," Sabrina tried to sound optimistic but deep inside she was actually hurting.
"Well, what if we get invited next year. Then we can say it doesn't just happen once, huh?"
Sabrina gave Zane a playful slap on his arm and rushed him out the car.
"Wait, I got us a lil somethin, somethin baby" Zane said pulling out a tiny bottle of tequila. "We gotta get them juices flowing if we're actually gonna stay."
Zane took the first sip hissing at the burning sensation the liquid left in his throat.
Sabrina took the bottle from him downing as much as she could ignoring the burn.
"Don't hog it all, baby," Zane said taking it from her and drinking the rest.
With that liquid courage in their systems the finally made their way to the building laughing at nothing and everything.
Once inside, they composed themselves as best they could.
"I'm just gonna go make sure I don't look a mess," Sabrina said making her way to the restroom.
She entered what she thought was an empty room but was startled by some low moaning sounds. If she hadn't been drinking tequila, Sabrina would have ran out laughing to go to tell Zane. But feeling as courageous and tipsy as she did, instead she went toward the door and opened it.
She didn't know whether to cry, scream, or laugh when she saw who was in there. Heath and the cheerleader captain, Martha. "Classy," was all she was able to say before making her way out of there.
