One Year Later
| Sab POV |
"I called you in because we're very impressed with your work, Sabrina. In a short period of time you've shown big promise in the journalist field and for this company. You were the fastest intern to be moved into a full time position and now we have another offer for you." Timothy, Sabrina's boss, sat at his desk hands intertwined as he spoke to her. "We have new offices opening in California and we'd love for you to fly out there and help run things. You know how we work and what better way to evolve in this career than to manage our brand new office. I know it's a big change but I'll give you some time to think about it. I'd love to have someone I trust across the country in Los Angeles while I'm here."
Sabrina felt stuck to her chair as Timothy's words struck her. The past year she had dedicated herself fully to her work not allowing any of her pain, resentment or sadness get in the way. She had been completely destroyed by Ken's unforgivable actions. She isolated herself from Lexie, Zane and completely ignored every single message Heath sent her.
He was relentless and for an entire year he sent a message at least once a month until he finally gave up. She couldn't bear speak to him, especially knowing somehow he'd been right about Ken all along. She felt stupid for not listening or realizing it herself. And her pride now was too big to accept it.
The hard word she'd put in was finally paying off and here she sat in her boss' office being offered the position of a lifetime. The answer was easy, 'yes, absolutely, of course' she should take the offer, move halfway across the country and finally be independent and freed from her past. But also, Zane and Heath were in Los Angeles.
Zane had contacted her once after finding out the news about Ken. She asked him to give her some space and he did just that, he just didn't think it meant give her space for the entire year. Lexie was always there, even when she didn't want her to be which caused some nasty exchange of words between them at times but Lexie understood Sabrina's behaviour and she couldn't blame her.
"I'll take it," Sabrina blurted out.
"Great!" Timothy was beyond happy and continued to explain what the next step in the process would be before she could regret it.
The office space was already set up with only a few employees from their Fort Lauderdale branch, including Sabrina, employed. Once over there, they'd have to see to hire interns, journalists, and qualified supervisors. It was a tough process but Timothy had all the faith in his team.
"When do you leave?" Lexie asked over dinner that night with Sabrina.
After everything, Lexie would come down from New York every few weeks to visit Sabrina. She was a dance teacher at a children's music studio but she was really hoping to get bigger gigs on stage in the future.
"The office isn't set to open until two weeks from now but I can leave this week." Sabrina took a bite of her stuffed potato from her favorite Cuban restaurant.
Lexie twirled her fork around finding a way to ask the question, until she finally did. "Have you told Zane?" She treaded lightly.
"No," Sabrina answered immediately. "Please don't tell him, yet. I promise I will. I just don't," Sabrina couldn't finish that sentence but Lexie understood.
Sabrina didn't want Zane to know because she knows he'd tell Heath. She misses them, too much, but she's not ready for that confrontation and honestly she's not sure when she'll be.
Her parents are beyond proud of her new job offer and they're excited for what the future holds for their daughter. Of course there is one thing Sabrina has left out, that is the fact that her former high school friends also reside on the west coast. Sabrina can already imagine the fit her mother would throw if she found out.
As Sabrina packs up her room, she's reminded of the time she packed her things and moved to New York. It's hard to believe that was five years ago and now she was moving to California, permanently if everything works out.
| Heath POV |
Everyday weighed heavy on Heath. He hated knowing he was right about Ken, he hated knowing that Sabrina would end up hurt. Worst of all, he hated not knowing how she was doing.
When Zane was finally able to speak to her, Heath waited patiently next to him to get some sort of hint of how she was, how she felt. But she only asked him to give her space, so he did. Heath was confused but he understood. Every time he'd beg Zane to check up on her again, Zane scolded him.
He was miserable not knowing, and even living in beautiful city like Los Angeles wasn't enough. But he finally understood that there was nothing he could do when she wouldn't answer his messages.
The apartment they moved in to was perfect for him and Zane. It was spacious and affordable, at least for the first few months. They never were good at managing their money and blew right through their savings in the first six months. It was terrible but their Vine stardom only grew bigger and sponsors poured in bringing in enough cash to help they finish out their lease. They met and collaborated with many other viners increasing their followers by millions. It was incredible and pretty surreal what two loners from Plantation Florida had achieved.
When their lease was finally up, they decided to room with other viners and rent out a house.
Scott and Todd, were sexier versions of him and Zane (Heath thought) but they were far more than their good looks and comical wits. Elton was more reserved, he kept to himself a lot but at times would surprise them with his adventurous ways. It was the perfect set up.
It had been an eventful year, meeting new people and creating amazing things with them but in the back of his head only one thought remained; Sab.
