Chapter 1
Morgan's pov
It felt so good to finally have a night off. No doubt we'd be called into work in the morning so I shouldn't drink too much, but I wasn't gonna miss out.
I'd picked a random bar not far from my apartment and took a seat along the far end of the bar. The music was loud, but not too bad; it was Bryan Adams ' Summer of '69. I'd just ordered myself a beer when a tall brunette woman in a purple dress sat down beside me. "What can I get you?" The scruffy looking bartender asked the woman.
"Large white wine. And a tequila!" She looked like hell and her order only seemed to reflect that she felt that way too.
"Rough day?" I attempted to make conversation.
"The worst!" She glanced over at me and I smiled for her to continue. "My ex just showed up to ask me if I could help get him off of a drugs charge. I mean, was he serious? The reason I left him in the first place was because of the drugs. And then as if that weren't bad enough, my 'perfect' best friend called to inform me that she'd just gotten engaged. Let's just say that I feel like total crap!" Wow, once she started talking, she didn't shut up. "Sorry. I'm Lauren by the way." The bartender placed her drinks on the bar and she went straight for the tequila.
"Derek." I extended my hand and she shook it.
"Nice to meet you Derek." She took a sip of her wine as I gestured for the bartender to come over. "Two more please?" Indicating for more tequila. He nodded and a few moments later placed two shots of tequila in front of us.
It was two hours later and nearly midnight. Lauren and I had been laughing and drinking the whole time. "You want to know my guilty pleasure?" Lauren asked in response to a comment I had just made. "Well, I'd have to say the Spice Girls ... and fairytales." I couldn't help it; I burst out laughing. Was she being serious? I couldn't actually tell. "What about you?" Now the tables had turned.
It was strange; I hadn't felt a connection with anyone like this since Emily left. It was nice. "90's boybands!" I looked down in shame. "Yep, I can't get enough of the backstreet boys." I flashed her a big grin and she let out a snort of laughter.
Lauren's laugh was infectious, as was her smile. There was just something about her that made me want to take hold of her and kiss her. "I'm sorry if this is a little forward, but Im a little drunk. Do you want to get out if here?" I didn't want to seem too eager by answering right away, so I waited a few seconds.
"Sounds good." She lived nearby, so we left almost instantly.
