Gon Freecss, like Killua, is joining the war at the age of 15, making him the other youngest army member. Although unlike Killua, Gon chose to be in the war. He wanted to join because of his father, who was also in the war but was deemed missing in action.
Gon trained himself by doing various physical exercises everyday ever since he was young to build muscle, and he spent a lot of time outside, even learning a few tricks the outdoors had to offer.
His determination was enough to convince the army to let Gon join early. Also proving to have over the average amount of physical strength of any normal person. He could've been an excellent combat solider but chose to become a medic instead, stating that he wanted to try to help his injured comrades when they needed it, so they could go back to their families alive.
Although he chose the medic route instead, he would be still taught basic combat skills along with having medical instructions.
Gon's Aunt Mito who he lived with, didn't want to see him go, but Gon told her that he would make her proud.
Then, he left on his big journey, not knowing what was in store for him.
