RECAP

I watch as Mum reaches behind her and pulls something out of her bag. She holds the rectangular piece of paper between two fingers.

My plane ticket, which I need, so I can get back to Melbourne.

She brings up her other hand and grips the two ends of the paper. She slowly tears it in two.

I am trapped in Sydney.

Mum smiles at me, still holding the ripped ticket.

"Now how about we go to the beach? Go get your bathers and anything you need." She says, acting like nothing has happened.

"No." I simply say. Mum's head turns towards me and she glares at me, anger filling up fee face.

"What was that?" She asks slowly, teeth gritted.

"I said no. You are not my mum and I am not going anywhere with you." I reply calmly.

Mum gets up and stands up in front of me, which I think is supposed to be intimidating, but she's a bit shorter than me so it isn't. What is intimidating is when she clutches my arm with her fake nails. I gasp in pain and tears threaten to fall out of my eyes, but I try to hold it together, to act like mum is a bully- if you don't give a reaction, the bully will get bored and lead you alone.

Somehow I don't think it's going to work.

"You will do whatever I say young lady." She snarls.

"Who are you?" I ask quietly put of fear.

"What?" She asks in confusion.

"I asked who you are, because you are not my mother! Mothers CARE for their children, not threaten them to go places!" I explain in a more confident voice. I rip my arm out of her grasp and see bright red scratches, luckily no blood.

"I am your mother!" Mum yells at me, obviously having no other comebacks.

"No you are not!" I yell back. Her face twists evilly and she balls her hands into fists.

"YES. I. AM!" She screams at the top of her lungs, and everything is on slow motion as her fist girls towards my face, hitting me in the left cheek.

The left side of my face feels like it's about to explode, there is so much pain. Too much pain, and I can't handle it. I close my eyes and feel the weight of my body being lifted as I fall to the ground. I open my eyes for a second ad I see the ceiling, then everything melts into darkness.

3 HOURS LATER

My face throbs in pain as I slowly open eyes. I blink a few times and bring a hand up to my face. My tab shakes as I brush it across my swollen cheek. My own mother punched me.

I pull myself up off the cold kitchen tiles and clutch the table for stability. I stagger into my room and grab my phone of the bed. It has a large crack in the screen, great, mum must have done this. Pressing the power button, I realise it still works, thank god for tough iPhones. Clicking on the safari app, I google the phone number for kids helpline. I copy the number into my dialpad and call it. A woman answers after two rings.

"Hello this is kids helpline, what can I help you with?" She asks nicely.

"My name is Gem Prebekway, I'm fifteen, my mum has turned abusive and she punched me in the face. I am supposed to fly back to my home in Melbourne in a couple of days, but she ripped up my plane ticket. Now she has left me locked in her house." I explain, spilling out what has happened in the past day.

"Okay. Well Hi Gem, my name is Felice. Are you hurt now?" She asks.

"My face is throbbing from the punch and I just woke up, I was knocked out for" I check my watch. "Three hours." I answer.

"Okay. What address are you at now?" Felice asks.

"24 Goldfen street, Sydney." I answer.

**NOT REAL ADDRESS**

"Good. We are going to send some of our help team to collect you now. I am calling the police to find your mother. Do you have any idea where she could be?" Felice says.

"Uh.." I walk into the kitchen ad look at the calendar on the wall. "It is a Tuesday, so mum will be at..." I look down to Tuesdays. "shooting club?!" I say shocked. Mum was never a violent person, I guess that has changed.

"Okay the police will look for her there. So Gem, in a few minutes you should hear knocking on your door, it will be the rescue team. Just yell out to then that you are locked in and then stand back, because they will break the door down." Felice explains casually, like its the most normal thing in the world to do.

"Okay thankyou." I reply.

"That's alright, thanks for calling. I will hang up now, but make sure you call back if you need anything else." She says.

"Okay, bye." I say hanging up.

I sit on my bed, waiting for the rescue team. I press the photos icon on my phone and scroll through all the pictures of Jai and I together. I stop on one of us kissing and realise just how much I miss him. I stay staring at it for a bit and then set it as my lock screen wallpaper. Just then I hear a knock on the door. Walking up to the door, I do just what Felice asked.

"The door is locked!" I call out.

"Not anymore!" A muffled voice calls back and I hear a key being turned in the lock. That's weird, how did they get the key? I stand back as the door swings open to reveal a person.

Definitely not the rescue team.
