Arnold Cunningham was a man of many, many words. That's what made him a good lawyer. When you talk so much that even the prosecutor gets bored it was pretty easy to get your way just so they could shut you up.
Indeed, it made him a great lawyer, but not a great boyfriend. "How come you haven't got a girl yet Cunningham?" Kevin Price would ask while they were in their dorm room; Arnold just chatting away.
"They say I'm too clingy, I really don't see it." Arnold said looking over at Kevin. Kevin was laying on his bed reading a book that looked too boring to hold Arnold's interest for long. Arnold missed Kevin rolling his eyes and muttering under his breath. Eventually the flow of words would start again.
Tonight, though, Arnold was worried. He had asked this really pretty girl out on this date. He hoped, not for the first time, that this would work out. He really liked her. He checked himself in the mirror again nervously. Kevin was reading on his bed.
"Do you think I look good?" Arnold said eyeing himself in his black suit and green tie.
"I think you look fine, Pal. What's got you so riled up anyhow?" Kevin said not looking up from his book.
"I want to impress someone..." Arnold said worriedly. Checking himself yet again to make sure. His huge black-framed glasses covered his round face, and his curly hair poofed up from his head like little clouds. He had always felt a little self conscious about the slight gap in his teeth too. He analyzed himself as he carefully checked a little checklist he had made for the date. He read online that it was a good way to stay organized. If there was any time Arnold was organized and put together he hoped it was tonight.
Kevin glanced up from his book. He smiled kindly at Arnold. "Here, I have something for that." He said and stood up. He opened his small wardrobe and pulled out a tiny glass flower. He placed it in Arnold's pocket. "My grandma would give me one of these when I was nervous about something. It's a good gift, and a nice reminder that you aren't alone."
Arnold looked down at the flower in his jacket pocket. It was light pink and so fragile. The small steam the length of his pinky. It had many petals together reaching out as in a giant frozen race to see who could reach the sky.
Arnold hugged Kevin. He smiled and thanked him, careful not to break the flower. Kevin froze and didn't hug back right away. Eventually, though, he smiled and hugged Arnold back slowly. "You're something incredible alright." Kevin said pulling away smiling.
"Thanks Price," Arnold beamed and took a deep breath. With his friends confidence behind him, he walked to the girls dorm.
-At the Dorms-
Arnold knocked loudly on the door to Naba's tiny dorm room. It quickly opened to reveal a bright smiling face. "Hi!" He hadn't meant to shout it.
"Hello," she laughed and stepped out. She was wearing a short gentle-pink dress. It seemed to flow in a nonexistent breeze. It looked soft and cool.
As if it was a mirror of calm Arnold felt himself relax more. He held out his arm fashionably. "To dinner, m'lady?" Naba giggled, an adorably musical sound.
She took his arm. "Lead the way," she joyously sang. Arnold smiled.
They walked across campus to a small diner. It wasn't too fancy, but it had a small dress code and fairly classic decor. It was a place the kids could go to if they went on a date. It wasn't really packed for a Tuesday night.
A nice waitress led them to an outdoor table. It was a cool night, with a sight breeze to shake the trees and give the air a crisp feel to it. The evening sun reflected off the couple. Naba's skin shined a dark gold in the light and Arnold was at a loss for words. Silence took the space of the atmosphere and stuck for a few brief seconds as the shy duo took each other in.
Surprisingly it was Naba who spoke first. "So, Arnold, what do you like to do?" Reality seemed to snap back to Arnold at the soft voices question.
"Uh, I like to play RPG games and first person shooters, sometimes I read trilogies I enjoy! You can never have enough Tolkien. I also like watching movies! My favorites are between the first movie of the Lord of the Rings or Star Wars!" He chirped excitedly. He was practically bouncing in his seat.
Naba gave him a confused look. "Tolkien?" She said testing the word on her tongue. Arnold thought that it was adorable and also very shocking.
"Yah, the creator of Lord of the Rings." He said, poor Naba still looked confused. "You have heard of The Lord of the Rings, right?" She slowly shook her head making her curls bounce.
Arnold was starring, and he knew it was rude, but Naba was starring right back. "After this I'm taking you to my favorite place." He smiled excitedly as the waitress came with their drinks and handed them menus.
The dinner was over quickly, neither one of them caring how fast they ate. After Arnold quickly paid for the meal. He took Naba's hand, they seemed to fit together perfectly.
Arnold lead them to a small library on campus. Not many people knew it even existed. When he entered a small bell rang and a pompous looking man came from behind the counter. "Arnold, my man, back to play more D&D?" The employee chirped.
Arnold shook his head making his curls bounce, "Nope, not today, set up the theater in back. I'm on a date." He said handing the employee a $20. Naba looked on in curiosity.
Arnold led her behind the counter to a mall dark room. She was confused as he told her to sit in a soft chair. He sat next to her in his own chair. Soon a light flickered and a wall right in front of them flashed with a logo. There was a small sound then they were surrounded by music.
Naba looked at the big screen as it showed little people with big feet and big bugs and pointed eared things. She looked at Arnold, but Arnold was looking at her.
She blushed and smiled. "What is this?"
"I'm going to introduce you to the Lord of The Rings." He looked excited. Naba turned her head to the screen and the movie started. Arnold reached for her hand and she let him, blushing slightly. The theater was just dark enough to see him blush too. This was the best date she had ever had.
