Day 86: Something That Made You Smile

There are two things I have to talk about because they made me smile and laugh.

Let's start with the flowers.  Yesterday I was working with a six year old and his friend.  I was just minding my own business, letting them play outside, when the two of them came walking into the kitchen all serious like.  One of the little boys held the bouquet of flowers you see in his hand.

"We picked these for you." He said as he set the flowers on the table.  "And I found this baby pinecone."  He added as he proudly set the pinecone next to the flowers.

"Oh my gosh! Thank you so much."  I said happily with a huge smile on my face...who doesn't like to have flowers brought to them for no reason.

I sat there examining the flowers when the little boy spoke up again.

"So..." He began.  "So, do you have something to trade for them?"  He asked.

"To trade for them?" I asked.

"Yeah."  The other little boy said.  "Like candy?"

"Like Sour Patch?"  The first little boy helped.

"Mmmm, I don't know."  I shrugged.  This was all part of my plan. I didn't want them to think I was too nice.

"You have to trade for them."  The boy said as if it was the most normal thing in the world to trade flowers for candy.

Isn't that so cute!?  Of course I traded for them.

***A FEW MINUTES LATER (and after the boys had gone back outside)

Again, I'm minding my own business when the same two boys come in...flowers in hand.

"We brought you more!"  They said happily.

"And I brought you another baby pinecone." One boy added as he dug through his pocket to find it.

*sigh*

That was the first thing to make me smile

Today while I was working with the same six year old.  He saw that I had painted my toenails.  He started asking me all these questions about them like: When did you do it?  Why are they so shiny if you painted them so long ago?

Then he said, "I wish I was a girl sometimes JUST so I could paint my nails.  Actually, I don't wish I was a girl because I like being a boy...I like to be stronger than girls."

Ok, back up.  Stronger than girls?  "Girls can be just as strong as boys." I remarked.

"I know...if they're older."  He remarked.

"There can be a girl and a boy the same age...and the girl can be stronger than the boy."

The six year old finally looks up from his artwork.  "How old are you again?"

I told him my age.

"I'm stronger than you."

sigh...

The nail polish is because I told the six year old that someday I would let him paint my nails.  I plan on having a lot of nail polish remover on hand.
