Marie's POV

"Thanks again for hemming my dress. The tailors in town would charge a fortune to fix a dress like mine." I said to Jade.

"No problem. I just finished mine and I cannot wait! The dance is just two days away so that means Sam has exactly two days to ask me!" She squealed.

Jade is obsessed over him. I have never seen Jade this giddy, she's typically cold and sarcastic. It's like she's turning into Amelia.

Sam is still dating his girlfriend, Sage. I saw them in the hallway together, and I couldn't tell one from the other. They both have shoulder length blonde hair and look like drug addicts.

"Well, fingers crossed!" I smiled enthusiastically.

-----

The next two days went by very quickly. I had my dress all ready hanging neatly. I left school half day that day to get my hair and makeup done professionally.

This was nothing to fool around with. My first big school dance. Most girls did their own, but I wanted this to be special.

Once I was all ready, I checked my makeup one more time and strapped on my heels.

Unexpectedly, my phone beeped.

It was Amelia.

Come to Jade's now. Major bff emergency.

Without a question, I asked my mom to take a quick stop at Jade's house before driving me to the dance.

Once I got to her house, Jade was sitting in the middle of the floor, crying her eyes out, and Amelia hugging her tight. Her beautiful hand sewn dress was ripped to shreds in frustration.

I ran over to her. "What's going on? Why aren't you in your dress?"

"I'm not going. He didn't ask me and I'm not going to look like a loser by myself." Jade looked embarrassed.

"Hey, you'll have me. Don't worry. Now let me do your makeup and let's get going. We'll be fashionably late, but--" I was cut off by Jade.

"No. I just can't do it." She sighed.

"Jade, come on," I tried to convince her, "you've always been so tough and never let anyone bother you like this."

"Didn't you hear what I said? I CAN'T DO THIS." Jade sobbed. "Maybe I'm not the girl that everyone thinks I am. I'm not so tough and invincible. Things can hurt me, too."

I never had thought about it like that.

Jade wiped her eyes. "But that doesn't mean that you can't go. Amelia and I will go with you but leave at the entrance."

I smiled. I was sad that Amelia couldn't go. She's a year younger than us, and the dance was only for freshmen. I hoped that this dance would be all that I dreamed it would be.

-----

Before leaving for the dance, I had to go back to my house to take pictures.

I was most excited to take pictures with my dad, because he wasn't there to see me try it on in the store. Dress shopping isn't his thing.

I walked out in my pink dress and he was beaming.

"Wow. You look so beautiful. How is it that my little girl is all grown up? It's like it was yesterday when you had your first choir concert." He was tearing up and that made me emotional too.

"Aw dad, it's ok." I hugged him, not used to seeing him cry.

My dad and I have always been so close. It all started when my mother started hitting me. He was there to stop her and keep me safe, and he even took some of the pain for me. I had to learn how to fend for myself. I think that this has made me a stronger person and the whole experience brought me closer to my dad.

My mom was waiting by the car, her work bluetooth in her ear. "Let's go, Marie. I haven't got all day. Tell your father to shut up so we can get going." She said while my father was right next to me. My mom won't even address my father unless it's in court.

My dad frowned and looked down at his shoes. "No worries, Mar. It's your special day. We won't let your mom get us down, will we? No way. I want you to have a great time. I love you."

I smiled and gave him a hug. "I love you too. I'll see you next weekend!" I hurried to the car and closed the door. I watched my father disappear into the distance as I waved goodbye to him, and he waved back.

Tonight will be great. I just need to focus on my friends and try to find Leo.

-----

I walked into the school cafeteria for the dance and found my friend Cara and a bunch of my other friends all dancing together. I walked over and we started chatting.

"Hey, have you seen Leo?" I asked, trying to talk over the music blasting.

"No. Dylan said he's not coming because of the embarrassment of the rejection. I'm sorry, I know how much you wanted him to come. Let's go have a good time!" Cara pulled me onto the dance floor.

"Just because he isn't here doesn't mean that we can't have fun!" She laughed and I wouldn't argue with her on that, so I danced too.

Cara is in my English class with Leo and Dylan. In the beginning of the year, I joked that she and Dylan should get together and go out. To get back at me, she teased me that I should date Leo. Now, ironically, she likes Dylan and I like Leo.

Currently, Dylan was watching Cara dance wit all of us.

"Go over to him! He clearly wants to dance with you." I nudged Cara.

"Okay, I'll go. See you later! Wish me luck." Cara walked over to Dylan and they started dancing with each other, but more like party dancing because it's not a slow song. It started more shy and awkward first, but then slowly became super adorable because they really loved being with each other.

After the hours of mingling, dancing, and flirting, the party was over.

It was a great time, but I really wish Leo had come.
