Marie's POV
I could only see watch as Nate circled around Jade and checked her out. His smirk, although barely visible by this time, told me he was up to no good.
"So, Jade, Justina and I are in need of a little favor. I think you are the perfect woman for the job." He hissed.
My eyes flitted to Jade and I saw that she was holding on to his every word like some kind of trance. She nodded.
"Mr Blake, my physics teacher, is filing a report to get me expelled from school. I couldn't imagine why. We've only had a few incidents this year," Nate said as if it was nothing. "I don't know who he thinks he is. I think he is deserving of a little punishment, don't you think? Maybe some incentive to shut his mouth?" Nate stopped pacing right in front of Jade.
She simply nodded again.
"You don't talk much, do you?" He asked, picking up her face in his hands once again.
"I just want to make sure that I am focused on the task at hand." Jade replied with a smirk.
Oh no. She's falling into his trap.
"Very good. I like commitment. Let's just see how you do with execution... I need you to watch for the police while Justina and I go into Mr Blake's classroom and teach him a lesson for a change." Nate looked over at me with disgust.
"But the love birds need to go. I don't trust these two to keep quiet about this. The deal is off unless they leave." Nate told Jade.
My heart dropped.
Jade looked at me. "Marie, I'll be alright. You and Leo go home, and I'll meet you after. Ok?"
I nodded numbly and Leo squeezed my hand. He led me back toward my house and tears started forming in my eyes. How could I let this happen? I should have just let them meet on their own. Now her life's in danger and no one is to blame but me.
Jade's POV
I stood quietly while Nate and Justina discussed exactly what they would be doing to Mr Blake's classroom. Justina had brought a bag full of things that they would be using, and I was afraid to ask what they were.
Nate walked back over to me. "I need you to stand in front of the school while we go inside. Give me your phone, I'll put my number in it and you call me if the cops come. Ok?"
"Sure." I grabbed my phone and gave it to him.
Now I have Nate Thurber's number.
This was the best night ever. Possibly the scariest too, but as long as I make it out of this alive and without a jail sentence, I'll be good.
"Alright, Jade. Wish us luck. And keep an eye out." Nate winked and turned to the back door where the custodian's closet is.
He takes a crowbar out of the bag and busts the door open.
After Nate and Justina go inside, I run around to the front so I can keep an eye out. This whole thing was exhilarating but terrifying all at the same time.
It had been about five minutes when I began to get bored. So, I tried to imagine Marie or Amelia in my situation right now. I actually laughed out loud because the idea was so ridiculous.
My thoughts were disturbed by the sound of sirens in the distance.
I whipped my phone out and dialed Nate's number as fast as I could.
I happened to notice that he put his contact name as "Nate ❤". Could he have actually meant to do that?
"Hey Jade, we're almost done. Meet us out back. Run." He hung up and I ran to the back of the building just in time to meet Justina and Nate as they ran out.
"Let's run to Marie's house! It's right around the corner!" I yelled as I gasped for air.
"Ok. Let's go! Before they catch us!" Nate yelled, catching up to me.
I turned around to see three police cars lined up in front of the school.
All three of us ran like we never had before. You would have thought that we were star athletes on the track team. We finally rounded the corner to Marie's house and stopped to catch our breath.
"Well done for your first time, Jade. You passed. See you on Monday. You can come sit at our table now at lunch, if you want to." Nate offered.
He walked over to me and pushed a piece of my hair behind my ear which must have fallen when I was running.
I blushed. "You will definitely see me on Monday. And, you'll learn that I actually talk a lot more."
Nate laughed. "All right, I'll see you then."
I watched Justina and Nate walk away and fade into the darkness.
I stood out there in the darkness and thought about the night. Bad girls might be all tough, but few of them ever actually do illegal things. And tonight was the night that I crossed that line.
I walked inside and Marie ran down the stairs to meet me.
Her eyes were red and her face was stained with tear stains. Her mascara and eyeliner was all over and her hair was a disaster. This was so unlike Marie to be seen like this.
Marie embraced me in the tightest hug ever. "Oh my God, you're okay! What happened? Are the police coming?"
I laughed. "No it was fine. I'm ok, and we ran away from the police just in time."
Leo came down and put his arms around Marie to calm her down. She slowly started to catch her breath.
"I was so worried. I'm sorry I got you into that mess. I won't meddle again, I promise." She said.
"Well, I kind of liked it, to be honest..." I said avoiding her gaze.
Marie's POV
All I could do was stare at her. There was no turning back.
Now she's his forever.
